Samsung’s got every reason to be happy these days. They’ve consistently held the no. 1 position in Canada in 2008, had significant growth in Q2 of this year, owns most of the touchscreen phones out now, and has a firm grasp at the no. 2 spot in the industry. However, despite all their achievements, one thing they can’t lay claim to or proudly boast of is a highly capable mobile operating system of their own.

Nokia has the Symbian platform, Google has the Android, Microsoft has Windows Mobile, and Samsung has, well, all of the above but nothing to call their very own. That’s soon to change, though, as Telecoms Korea reports that Dong-hoon Chan, head of Samsung’s mobile devices design group, has confirmed that they are indeed working on one as he was quoted as saying:

“As have other leading mobile phone makers, Samsung has considered the necessity of developing its own operating system. And now is the right time to realize that advancement.”

Unfortunately, no further details we’re revealed regarding what kind of OS it will be and when it will exactly be launched.

Nevertheless, we can't help but feel giddy with excitement over this bit of news. With their vast experience in the business, we’ve no doubt that Samsung’s more than qualified and capable of coming out with a very reliable and versatile operating system for their mobile devices. When this happens and if they get it right, this will no doubt further strengthen their position in the market, and who knows, may even be the added push they need to finally overtake Nokia at the top spot.

Good luck, Samsung! We're certainly looking forward to seeing your mobile OS soon. Just don't take to long though.
