We’re officially into the mid-part of Q3 2009 already, and now’s a good time find out who were the movers and shakers in Q2 (April-June) as Gartner has just released sales figures for the past quarter. Worldwide mobile phone sales declined as it drops 6.1% as compared to the same period last year. On the good side, however, smartphone sales have significantly improved by 27% with 40.9 million devices sold this year which is a stark contrast to the 32 million units that were sold in Q2 2008.

As far as market share is concerned, Nokia is still the top seller in mobile phone sales owning 36.8% of phones sold in Q2 with Samsung - 19.3%, LG - 10.7%, Motorola - 5.6%, and Sony Ericsson - 4.7% rounding up the top five. Interesting to note is that Nokia’s sales actually dropped from a high of 39.5 % in 2008 while Samsung and LG improved from their last year’s market share of 15.2% and 8.8% respectively.

Meanwhile, in smartphone sales, Nokia remains to be unchallenged with 45% marketshare. RIM is in second place with 18.7% while Apple - 13.3%, HTC - 6%, and Fujitsu - 3% close out the top five brands. Apple is the biggest gainer here as they've made a big jump from their 2.8% market share in 2008 to double figures this year thanks to their new iPhone 3G S.

Palm, unfortunately, didn’t manage to break into the top five despite the release of their new smartphone. However, for those curious as to how the Pre is currently doing, Gartner reports that 205,000 units have been sold since its availability in the market. They could have probably done better if not for the limited Pre supply during its launch, but that’s all done and over with and all Palm can do now is work on what they’ve already been able to achieve with the Pre and their new webOS platform.
