An answer to a super-old question I'm afraid, but for anyone else needing to know how to put it (and many other phones) into Safe Mode: while the phone is on, press and hold the Power button until the pop-up appears, then long-press "Power off" until the phone restarts - all user-installed apps will be disabled. Restart again and it will boot up normally with all apps enabled.
