Apple App Store surpasses 500 Million Downloads

Barely has a month gone by when Apple reached the 300 million mark in downloads from their App Store, and now, they’ve accomplished a new feat as it has surpassed 500 million downloads.

With now over 15,000 apps available, the numbers will no doubt continually grow especially now that they’re allowing more varied apps such as 3rd party internet browsers to be offered as well. Looking at its tremendous growth, it shouldn’t come as a surprise why the likes of Google, Microsoft and Palm all want to offer a similar service with their own mobile operating system.

Of course, not all of the downloaded apps are paid for as we’ve seen in the breakdown that a lot of the apps in the App Store are actually free, but with 500 million apps being downloaded, we’re pretty sure that a significant number of those have been paid for nonetheless.

  4. Cydia to open Paid App Store for Jaibroken iPhones says:

[...] In an unexpected new twist, Cydia has planning to open an app store that will offer paid apps. For the most part, Cydia has been a repository of free apps for jailbroken iPhones, and while it has lured a lot of owners to the jailbreaking front, it had very little to offer enterprising app developers. Now, with this latest move, Cydia can now offer developers a source of revenue especially for those innovative enough to churn out hit apps, but can’t seem to pass Apple’s rigorous approval process. Of course, one thing going against Cydia is that you’ll have to undergo the tedious process of jailbreaking your iPhone every time a new firmware update is released. However, if they can manage to come out with a very enticing collection of apps that can easily beat whatever Apple is offering over at their side of the fence, then we’re pretty optimistic of Cydia’s chances in rivaling the Apple App Store.
