What You Need To Know

Petro-Canada Mobility uses the Rogers network to deliver 3G and 4G mobile service across the country. All plans include Canada-wide calling so you don’t have to worry about long distance fees. Topping off is easy as well with both online access or top-off cards at any Petro-Canada location.

You will prepay for all services. Both pay-as-you-go and monthly bundles are available. Bundles start at just $15 with the most expensive bundle running $100 before add-ons and fees.

Although Petro-Canada doesn’t sell a large selection of phones, the ones they sell appear to be solid options. However, you won’t find any device financing options or subsidies. If you’d prefer to bring your own device, their 3-in-1 SIMs take the guesswork out of finding the right option for your mobile device.

What’s Good?

  • Both PAYG and monthly bundle options
  • No contracts or credit checks
  • All talk plans are Canada-wide
  • All plans include unlimited Canada-wide texting

What’s Bad?

  • No phone financing
  • No international roaming
  • Low data caps
  • Tethering prohibited

Notable Features

  • Flat-Rate Bundles: Enjoy an assortment of minutes, texts and data each month customized to fit your needs.
  • Canada-wide Calling: No need to worry about zones or provinces with Petro Canada as all plans include calling anywhere in the country.
  • Petro-Canada Mobility Rewards: Earn Petro-Points rewards for every dollar you spend on service.

Awards and Recognitions

How’s the Network Coverage and Speed?

Petro-Canada Mobility uses the Rogers network. This means you get the coverage and speeds of a big carrier with the costs of a smaller prepaid option!

You can check coverage and network types in your area at the Petro-Canada Mobility support page.

The Rogers network ranked third for download speeds in both the 4G and 3G network categories in Tutela's 2018 "Mobile Experience Report", tests showed an average speed of 16.12Mbits/sec for 4G downloads and 3.92Mbits/sec for 3G downloads. Uploads speeds averaged 7.73Mbits/sec across both 4G and 3G networks.

The 2016 PC Magazine study “Fastest Mobile Networks in Canada,” showed download speeds for the Rogers network averaging 43Mb/sec and upload speeds averaging 22Mb/sec.

Ookla’s “Speed Test Market Report Canada” reports slightly slower speeds. Their 2016 tests showed download speeds of 29MB/sec and upload speeds of 10Mb/s.

Do They Charge Roaming Fees?

All bundles include coverage from coast to coast. Roaming outside of Canada is not allowed using Petro Canada.

If you’re traveling out of the country, we recommend using a travel SIM or picking up a cheap prepaid SIM to use with an unlocked phone when you reach your destination.

What About Long Distance Fees?

All calls within Canada are billed at local rates or from your monthly bundle allotment.

Calls outside Canada are subject to a long distance calling fee as follows:

  • North American long distance: $0.55 per minute
  • Text messages to US numbers: $0.15 per text
  • Text messages to international numbers: $0.35 per text

You can find out more by clicking “See Full Details” on the Monthly Plan page.

Does Petro-Canada Offer Wi-Fi Calling?

No. Petro-Canada does not support native Wi-Fi calling or offer a Wi-Fi calling app.

How About Voice over LTE (VoLTE)?

No.

Can I Tether My Phone?

Tethering is not allowed on Petro-Canada Mobility.

In their Terms and Conditions, they state:

“Petro-Canada Mobility Plans Cannot be Used for:

i. access to the Internet, intranets, or other data networks except as the device’s native applications and capabilities permit, or

ii. any applications that tether your device to a laptop or personal computer other than for the use of Wireless Sync.”

Do They Offer Data Rollover?

No, data from monthly bundles expires at the end of the month.

Do They Offer Add-ons or Bundles?

No--outside of the ability to customize your monthly bundle plan, there are no additional features you can add to your plan.

Can I Bring My Own Device?

Yes! Most unlocked devices with support for the 850 and 1900Mhz bands work with Petro-Canada Mobility. You’ll need to order a SIM and activate it to start service.

For more information, consult their Phones & SIMs support page.

Do They Require A Contract?

No. As all services are prepaid, you are free to quit using the service at any time.

What About Activation and SIM Fees?

Petro-Canada does not charge activation fees.

To bring your own phone or tablet, you'll need a Petro-Mobile SIM.

SIM kits are available online for $10 and at select retail locations.

For more information, consult their Getting Started with Petro-Canada Mobility page.

What About Early Termination Fees?

No. Without a contract or device financing options, there are no worries about fees if you cancel.

Can I Port My Number To or From Petro-Canada Mobility?

Petro-Canada Mobility follows all Wireless Number Portability guidelines allowing you to transfer your number from an existing landline or mobile line to your new Petro-Canada Mobility line of service.

Requirements are as follows:

  • The account from which you are transferring the number must be assigned to the same name and address as your Petro-Canada Mobility account.
  • The account you’re transferring from must be in good standing--including payment of any fees resulting from porting the number.
  • The number you’re transferring must be local to your service area.

For additional information, consult their Number Portability page.

Will They Unlock My Phone?

All Petro-Canada phones are sold unlocked. If you need assistance unlocking a phone from another carrier, consult our other Carrier Summaries for contact information and unlocking terms.

Terrible support personnel

Their payment system is terrible, trying to get anything resolved is almost impossible as the support people don't even look at the account and just try to argue with you. Guess they're so cheap for a reason.

bad payment system makes sure you lose time at renewal. wont let you pay online. must go buy overpriced vouchers to top up once plan expires as no way to logon to pay. their sim card is overpriced too. never going to come back.

Scammers

Over paid my bill and switched carriers at the end of the contract.  Been 6 week fight to get my $100 back.  Most dishonest company

They gouge and overcharge, they cut you off, and when you try to contact them they keep you on hold for 15 minutes and then cut you off. Will be reporting to CRTC and BBB.

By far the worst re-seller or carrier period!

Totally useless customer service because none of them know what they are doing and they setup things incorrectly for you.  The only reason, I am willing to put up with them so far is the Text A Lot plan for my daughter at $15 but prepare to be for agony in managing the account, topping up and I can't seem to have auto pay setup so the stupid account does not go into expiry mode.  I even asked the customer service rep to help set it up but long behold a month later, account no longer works.  Worst thing is when I call and spoke to Jason, he say I have to go to a Petro-Can station to buy a top up voucher in then call them to activate the expired account again.  WTF - really so I manually did it online and of course it is working again.  However, I still don't know why the auto pay does not work so now have to call back again...hopefully, don't have to do this every freaking month.  Oh, you can never see how you top up money is spend - no statement and no details online.  What kind of a stupid business operates this way!  Just beware, if you are impatient, this carrier/reseller will make your blood boil.  There were other issues but not going to get into it.  Just simply sucks!  As for actual call or text, well they use Rogers so it is as good as they are.  I would give Petro-Can zero star if I could.  I had CityFone, Fido, Freedom (was Wind) and of course Rogers and Telus and never experience this kind of frustration with account management.

They should add $1.25 to plan fee to be paid at once. I asked to pay $1.25. No, I have to pay increments of $15, $20...

I lost some $23. I packed and ported my number to Koodo prepaid right away.

STAY AWAY FROM THESE GUYS

At renewal you lose a few days

The service is terrible, and their policy too. I bought $20 plan, Text a lot. Few days before the plan expiry, I added another $20 (plus taxes) for next period. They added 30 days from day of new payment and not from expiry day. So, I lost few days of service. Terrible. You lose a few days unless you add money at the very last day of expiry. I will switch to Koodo prepaid soon.

We could not get our data to work at all. Phone reps were of no help and they did not forewarn us of this problem. Now I have been waiting 2 days to get my new number ported over to my new provider. Stick with selling gas !!!!
Unhappy

Shocking customer service

I have now spoken with at least 5 CSRs after they messed up my account.  The 4th time I called I was on the phone with the CSR at least a half hour - none of the things he said he would do to fix my account were done.  When I called back today, the actually knowledgeable CRS said there were no notes taken and all the things #4 told me were wrong.  #5 resolved my problem - but it took almost a MONTH!!!
