Recombu

Big screen, big snappers

from Recombu

The XA1 Ultra's camera setup exhibits a notable disparity between still and video quality. Its front camera is arguably the more balanced of the two sensors overall, making this the ideal companion for selfie lovers and vloggers on a budget, as mentioned earlier.

Digit

A dependable smartphone for big-screen phone lovers

from Digit

Bezel-less phones have become the trend lately, and believe it or not Sony has been with it this time. The company’s Xperia XA branded smartphones have followed bezel-less form factors for a while, and this, the Xperia XA1 Ultra is the “biggest” of the lot. It has a 6-inch near bezel-less screen and Sony’s top-end 23 megapixel rear camera. In some ways, the Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra has the specs down right, but then it also has some glaring flaws.

Isn’t a bad phone, but the competition makes it look overpriced

from NDTV

The Xperia XA1 Ultra is a big screen device aimed at people specifically looking for a phablet for entertainment purposes. Its big bezel-less display is ideal for watching content and playing games but could have done with some stereo speakers. We like how Sony has tuned the Helio P20 chip and the Xperia UI to deliver good battery backup but the lack of a fingerprint scanner and 4K video recording are two of the major drawbacks of this smartphone.

WhatsYourTech

Feels like an enlarged version of the XA1

from WhatsYourTech

The Xperia XA1 Ultra is one of those rare phones that has a big screen without the price tag more premium devices have. It won’t overly impress, but it should be serviceable for the budget-conscious looking for a larger display.

GSM Dome

Phablet love is back

from GSM Dome

The Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra feels like the ideal phone to take on a holiday, especially if you like to take selfies and vlog your life. It also handles TV show watching like a champ, with a generous battery and the main camera pics are good enough for Facebook. The CPU and 4 GB will play the bulk of the games in the Play Store. Yes, there is some lag and some strange hues captured by the camera, but overall, the device delivers on its biggest promise: replacing a 7 inch tablet and your average phablet.

Geared up

Big display, adequate battery backup, high-res cameras front and rear, the Xperia XA1 Ultra is tailor-made for the YouTube-watching, selfie-snapping, Insta-sharing crowd that have the phone in their hands all day. Other phones can fill those shoes, yes - some cheaper, and some more powerful too. But Sony fans would pick the Ultra over all of the above any day, and (as it often happens with the company's mid-tier) it would actually be a very reasonable choice.

PhoneArena

Snappy performance, solid battery life

from PhoneArena

When compared side by side with its smaller sibling – the Xperia XA1 – the XA1 Ultra almost looks a bit tacky. It’s like if Sony wondered how to make a more premium-looking mid-ranger, but the only ideas they had were “make it bigger” and “put some metal on it”. And neither of these decisions do it much favor, immediately drawing attention to design problems the smaller model’s body did a much better job of hiding.
