Combine the PEBL with a Linux-based OS and you get the stylish and capable Motorola ROKR U9.

The ROKR U9 is a compact, but not cramped, flip with a feature set that includes a 2MP camera, voice dialing, expandable memory up to 4GB, and all the customization options you’ve come to expect. The internal screen has a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and measures two full inches.

And it’s all wrapped up in an eye-catching, rounded shell reminiscent of a stone worn from ocean waves.

The ROKR weighs in with a 7.2 hour talk time and up to 350 hours of standby time, which is definitely better than other phones in its category.

For the fashion-minded who enjoy personalizing their phone, the Motorola ROKR U9 is an excellent choice.

At first I was quite happy with the ROKR U9, with its cool design, the touch screen ect. But then after the first month the screen started to freeze, and eventually the phone broke after 6 months. The curious thing is that my friend bought the same phone and he had the same problems after 6 months, both our phones broke in the same place. Now we cannot use ours U9 since the screen is dislocated. Less

Okay phone

I got this phone because it was the cheapest that I could get with my 3 year contract. The ROKR isn't a bad phone, but it's not great either. I got this phone because it was the cheapest that I could get with my 3 year contract. The ROKR isn't a bad phone, but it's not great either. My fave features were the 3 alarm clocks, the currency converter option in the calculator, and the ability to insert hard and soft pauses in your saved phone numbers. If you enjoy customizing the displays your phone, this can be a lot of fun. You can choose from 3 preset themes, and then you can further customize each aspect of your phones look. You can also personalize the main menus which is handy. The only annoying non-customizable aspect of the phone was the exterior background. You can customize the screensaver, but not the stupid "flames" behind the clock. Therefore your phone is forever stuck looking like like some 1950s hotrod. Plus eventually your shell gets scratched and beat up, so it's not nearly as shiny after the first month. Ringtones are limited, but you can always download some more. I found the volume on this phone to be VERY low, and the vibration levels pitiful. I missed many calls because I couldn't hear or feel the damned thing in my pocket. I'm looking for a new phone now, only because 13 months after I bought my ROKR, the casing cracked open. This makes me question the quality of the phone since I'm a very light cell phone user. I've never dropped the thing in my life - it just started cracking one day and it's falling apart now. Less

To be honest I can't tell whether all the stupidity of this phone comes from the manufacturer or from Fido's programming of the menu. Let's just say there's a permanent BOUTIK thing on the front screen, but it takes shuffling through THREE DIFFERENT MENUS to change your call answer settings. Also, three of the options given on the call answer menu are not actually offered, so if you select them, incoming calls are directed into the void. (I verified this with Fido but they didn't explain why they hadn't update the menu to match what they actually offer.) I liked Motorola's PEBL but this is no replacement. The PEBL had a nice non-slippery finish and a very nifty one-hand flip-open hinge. The U9 is slick and slippery and takes 2 hands to pry open. Also, the exterior clock is not backlit like the PEBL, so if you try to see it in daylight you're out of luck. Altogether it's such a shoddy replacement for the PEBL that I was very disappointed. (I'd still be using the PEBL but it went the way of all hardware and stopped working.) Less
