Hot off the heels of the release of the Nokia E71x, word is that Nokia is preparing a slight upgrade to their successful E71 QWERTY-equipped smartphone dubbed as the Nokia E71i.

This new smartphone will supposedly retain the overall design and aesthetics of the original E71, but will include some minor hardware and software upgrades. A 5-megapixel camera and S60 FP2 OS have been reported to be some of its new features, and will also be available in a new color variant, brown/mocha. We’re still hoping that more new features such as WiFi 802.11n compatibility will be integrated into this new variant of the E71, but for now, this is all we know about the Nokia E71i. It’s expected to be announced this fall.

We’re delighted to hear that Nokia has finally decided to address the minor flaws on the E71, but we’re also a bit worried that with the inclusion of these new features, it’ll also incur a rather significant price increase as well. After all, aside from being a well-featured smartphone, the greatest selling point of the E71 is its affordable price. It would be a mighty shame if this wouldn’t also be the case with the Nokia E71i.
