Earlier this year, Globalive hit a major setback on their road to becoming the newest carrier in the country when they apparently failed to meet Canadian ownership requirements. Today, however, is a brand new day for the company as Industry Minister Tony Clement has announced that the federal government is overruling the previous decision of the CRTC and giving Globalive (aka Wind Mobile) the green light to operate in Canada.

Here’s a video of Wind Mobile breaking the good news to everyone courtesy of Mobilesyrup:

Wind Mobile will initially be available in Toronto and Calgary, and according to Chairman Tony Lacavera, could even launch as early as next week. We don’t have the specifics yet as to what their price plans are, but its certain that it won’t come with SAF and 911 fees. As far as devices are concerned, we hear that Samsung, HTC, and BlackBerry are some of the brand names to look out for though no Android phones are reportedly part of their line-up. We’ll report more on this as the story continues to unfold in the next couple of weeks.

So I guess it’s a merry Christmas after all for Wind Mobile, and 2010 is surely shaping up to be quite a competitive year for carriers in maple leaf country.
