The entry of Sony Ericsson into the Android scene with the debut of the XPERIA X10 is truly worth celebrating. However, what’s even more exciting is news that their new UX interface and Mediascape and Timescape apps won’t be exclusive to this particular XPERIA phone only.

Electricpig got a chance to chat with Steve Walker, head of Sony Ericsson Portfolio Planning, and he revealed that the UX interface will actually be released on their future Symbian-based devices as well. Here’s what he shares about their new offerings, and the Android and Symbian platform:

We do intend products on Android and on Symbian. The intention is to not be specifically related to one particular platform…it’s not the right time to bet on any particular horse.

As for their new Timescape and Mediascape apps, Sony Ericsson announced that they will be opening up the APIs for these applications with an appropriate SDK ready for release sometime in early 2010. You can read the entire press release over here.

Below is a video of Erica Kato Marcus, Sony Ericsson Head of Application Planning for the XPERIA X10, giving us an overview of some of the good stuff Timescape and Mediascape brings to the table:

This actually isn’t a surprising move for Sony Ericsson. If you can recall, when they introduced their first Windows Mobile-powered device, the XPERIA X1, they also released an SDK to developers allowing them to create their own Panels for the XPERIA. We’re not too sure how well or poorly it was received by the developer community, but nonetheless, they’re pretty keen in sharing the love with as many people as possible. It’s just sad to see that it hasn’t exactly resulted in better profits for the company. Hopefully, with their venture into the hot Android market, things will be a lot better this time around.
