ZTE may not be a well-known cell phone manufacturer in North America yet, but it is the sixth largest original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the world, and number one in China. For 2010, ZTE plans to sell 100 million units in its effort to become the fifth largest OEM in the world.

Okay, okay. I just wanted to give you a little background because the F350 Salute is the first ZTE phone offered by Verizon.

So is it any good? The F350 Salute is a CDMA vertical slider with a handsome black and silver two tone finish. The 2.4 inch 240 x 320 pixel resolution display is above average for a phone in this category. The dedicated “send” and “end” keys are triangular-shaped, like little pizza slices. The circular navigation pad is large enough to be easily accessed without error.

The Salute, while unremarkable, is a viable contender for its entry-level category. It features a 1.3MP camera, GPS, Bluetooth, and a modest selection of basic phone features, including a 1,000 capacity phonebook, alarm, speakerphone, etc.

With a talk time of up to four hours and a standby time of up to 220 hours, the Salute is more interesting in its Verizon debut and promise of things to come rather than this particular model.

The menu system is easy to figure out, but some might be tired of the same old thing. The email and social networking options are limited, but do work if you don't mind jumping through some hoops.

With the Verizon Wireless Salute F350 being the first device for the carrier produced by ZTE, it is unfortunate that it does not stand up well to other budget oriented phones by LG and Samsung. Overall, the device feels cheaply made, the screen looks washed-out on its own and is almost unviewable outside... More
