Some phones are good for music playback while others are good for taking pictures. The Samsung Montage is an example of a phone that’s good for messaging on the go.

Its main features include a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth wireless, USB connectivity, and support for microSD cards. It’s actually a fairly basic handset that lacks many of today’s latest phone features; it doesn’t have Wi-Fi or 4G LTE. But what it does have is a hardware QWERTY keyboard that slides out from behind the screen and turns it into a landscape messaging device.

As you can imagine, the Montage is great for long bouts of text messaging or emails. As most reviews note, it’s a very useful messaging phone, for sure. However, its other attributes are quite disappointing overall.

If you've got a bit of room in your budget and aren't 100% set on a physical keyboard, you might be better served by competitive devices.

Excels at communication, but anyone wanting more out of a phone should look elsewhere

For smartphone users, the Array will seem downright primitive, and in many ways it is. You can't access a robust app store, it doesn't have a full Web browser, and you can't watch a movie on it. Yet, it does excel at exactly what a phone should do while adding a few extras here and there. The phone book... More

A functional messaging phone without a contract, though its poor battery life and entry-level features hardly stand out in the crowd

Taken in the context of Virgin Mobile's feature phone options, the Samsung Montage is an acceptable choice. Based on looks alone, I prefer its build to the Samsung M575's (which is why it also gets higher marks in that category), though the latter has a slightly larger battery for longer talk time, and... More
