LG’s rise in the standings is already quite a remarkable feat, but as most companies in the industry will agree, there’s still nothing sweeter than reaching the top spot. As such is the case, it comes as no surprise that Ahn Seung-kwon, president for LG’s mobile business, has expressed their intentions of snatching the #2 spot from Samsung by 2012 in their bid to inch closer to Nokia at the top.

That's really a bold statement to make, but not completely unfounded considering their stellar performance in Q1, and brisk sales of the LG Cookie, and QWERTY handsets in 2008. Apart from that, he also disclosed in the same interview with Yonhap News Agency some of their plans for the remainder of this year and down the road leading to 2012. In Q4, they will be launching a new “Black Label” series which will take the iPhone head-on. They’re also quite pleased with the response of consumers to their Prada line and their working on another Prada handset to add to the collection. Last, but certainly not the least, LG is planning to lure in the high-rollers and big spenders in the market with a new luxury premium cellpone line similar to the Vertu brand of Nokia.

This is all well and good, and will no doubt help them attain their goal of improving on their current position in the market. Will it be enough for them to clinch steal the #2 ranking from Samsung? Only time will tell, but there's no question that this will only further cement their hold on the #3 spot.
