A standardized mobile phone charging port is finally coming, not yet in our neck of the woods though but in Europe.

No to different charging portsThis initiative was first put forward back in June 2009, but it’s only now that it will take effect. MicroUSB is the interface that’s been approved, and beginning next year, all new phones to be released in Europe will have this as its charging port. Big names in the industry such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and Apple all have signed up to be part of this noble cause. You can read more about this landmark decision over here.

The big question on our mind is, what will happen to the iPhone? It’s easy for other manufacturers to adapt to this new rule since they release a number of phone models every year, but in the case of Apple, they only have one model and it uses a 20-pin interface which also doubles as a sync port and is standard on their all their iOS devices. Will Apple change this to adapt to the new standard in Europe, or will they just provide a microUSB adaptor instead? My guess is it’s the latter, but only time will tell.

More importantly though, now that its taking effect, we’re hoping other countries will follow the EU's lead and adapt this new standardized micrUSB charging port.
