And you can't turn the speaker phone feature on unless the places call has been answered on the other line. Less

The phone would be useless with a bad battery! Did you even think of purchasing a new battery?

Good enough

I bought this for my wife who uses it for emergencies and then a litlle more. It's not your top of the line phone but it is reliable and it works very well. We've had it for over two ears now and it's still as good as new.

This phone really stinks.

I've had it for about a year and a half. Nothing but grief. It blanks out and you have to remove the battery. It drops calls (probably partly to do with Cingular crappy service). I would have rated it a zero on performance but there wasn't a zero category. Less

I'm a pretty tech-allergic person. I've had this phone for about a year, and have been very happy with the reception I've gotten in and around urban and rural areas. Cons are that the camera lens and external display are not very well sealed, so dirt is sneaking in to fog them up. Unattractive, but not life-threatening. In addition, the external display seems to have gotten confused these days and doesn't consistently display the time and other icons, but rather a blank blue screen. The other day, the audio stopped working, meaning that people can call me, but I can't hear them, even though they can hear me. Despite all that, I am trying to replace it with the same model because I like the basic features and don't need fancy bells and whistles. Less

I bought this phone the minute it came out even though slimmer, more expensive phones were coming out around that time. I probably paid 170$ for the phone at the time. I had previously owned a Sony Ericsson T300/306 and found the phone to be bulky and impractical. All I knew was that I wanted a flip phone with a camera and WAP. I demand a lot from a cellphone.. mostly reception, durability, and practicality. Being in a long distance relationship, my cellphone is stuck to my ear almost 24 hours a day. The shape and weight of the z500a is perfect, while open there's a place along the fold of the phone for your finger so your hand doesn't cramp while on long phone calls. The z500a doesn't have Bluetooth after all. Reception, I never had any difficulties. If anything, especially while traveling, my phone would have reception while my friends' phones wouldn't. The only dropped calls I ever had were the fault of Cingular itself. The battery, even after a year plus, still gave me just as much talk time as when I had first bought the phone. It's the little things that made me fall in love with this phone, mostly because the bigger things worked so well already. The colour external screen with caller preview in combination with the side buttons allow you to turn off the ringer or direct the call to your "busy" voicemail. I've also never taken pictures on accident with this phone, thanks to the foolproof hold-down-for-two-seconds camera button located on the side of the phone then a separate button on the other side of the phone to take the picture. I couldn't live without the nifty little applications, especially the stopwatch, timer, and alarm. My favourite part were the sticky notes that could be placed on your standby screen until being taken off. Owning this phone for more than a year with no problems, my z500a survived repeated droppings and even violent trips against walls, cement sidewalks, asphalt, cars, etc. Given the way the phone is built, it won't break into a million pieces when you throw it. At the most, it'll split into three parts, the top and bottom covers then the main phone itself. This makes putting it back together easy. So if you're clumsy or have a quick temper, you don't have to worry. This phone isn't for everyone. It's big compared to flip phones now a days, and very obvious in your pocket. If you're obsessed about (lack of) size, having this phone might weigh you down too much. The lack of Bluetooth could be a real set back in itself, though the shape of the phone makes up for it. And obviously reception isn't so stellar for everyone (or so other reviews say). But if you can live with its size, it's a very durable and dependable phone that's more attractive than the more recent z525. Less

Before I got this phone, I had a Nokia flip phone. Unfortunately my dog chewed it up, so I went to a Cingular store to get a used flip phone they had availible and that was the Sony Ericsson. Even though the screen was hard to see outside (it was also was the same thing with my nokia phone) and the camera picture quality was a disappointing (worse than the camera on my nokia phone). I really don't care about using the camera feature on my sony ericsson anyways. Everything else had features I wanted and worked pretty good. The reception on the Sony Ericsson was alot better than the reception on the nokia phone I used to have. This phone was very reliable and I never had any phone related problems with it. Times that makes my phone act goofy is just because of the phone service carrier and their glitches (Cingular). Less

This phone was amazing when I got it. I've had it for about a year and I'm waiting for the day to get rid of it. The faceplate that is supposed to be "easy to change" is a tad bit too easy to change. It falls off almost every time I use the phone. It also has a problem with freezing. Every so often, the phone decides to not work and either switches off or on or decides to stop working and won't turn off leaving me no option but to remove the battery. The camera isn't great. I've gotten decent pictures from it though. The games are dissappointing because all of them on my phone are demos and allow very little game time. Ringtones for this phone are horrible. None of them are decent. I've also found that on some days, the phone decides to just not ring. The only positive thing I've found about this phone is it's speakerphone function. Less
