RATING
Based on 74 reviews

Sony Ericsson is known for great displays and serious cameras, and the K850i is no exception. Sporting a 5MP camera, complete with LED photo light, flash, video recording, and a host of photo-editing features, you are guaranteed a quality picture! In fact, the K850i feels and operates almost exactly as a standalone Cybershot camera when being used for picture taking.

This 3G capable candy bar phone has a beautiful 240x320 pixel screen, measuring 35x45mm, capable of reproducing 262,144 colors (I can name the first five!). Available in shiny-black only, you also get an FM radio, 40MB of onboard memory (external memory via Memory Stick Micro).

While the Sony Ericsson K850i is great for pictures, it appears to be at the expense of a comfortable keypad. The 4-way navigation pad is set in the middle of the keys, making “misses” probable. They keys are easy to press but are close enough to cause still more errors. It would have been much better had Sony Ericsson spent more time on the keypad layout.

The K850i supports WAP protocol 2.0 and Java, providing an enhanced web experience.

The K850i is rated at a talk time of 540 minutes and a standby time of 400 hours. This will vary depending on usage patterns.

If you want a good phone with a great camera, and if you are not a heavy texter, take a look at the Sony Ericsson K850i.

This pin-striped, 3G beauty isn't picture perfect

from Wired

Image isn't everything. Beyond a solid Cyber-shot-branded cam, this tidy 118 gram candy bar comes chock full of sweet, easy-to-master programs that let you edit, remix and publish sharp pics and vid clips on the fly. In minutes, we whipped up a 45-second, 1.7 MB video slideshow that looked surprisingly decent online at 240x320. But despite Bluetooth, adequate web browsing and RSS feeds, this pin-striped, 3G beauty isn't picture perfect. Switching between the somewhat finicky partial touch screen and quasi-D-pad really took some getting used to. And the keypad's tiny nubs could aggravate eve... Full review

A bunch of novelties in design, navigation and functionality

from GSMArena

We believe the Sony Ericsson K850 lives up to the responsibility of being a landmark product in the company portfolio. With rich camera settings, the K850 comes incredibly close to stand-alone digital cameras. The novelties in navigation suggest the K850 will not resort to simply being an upgrade to older Cyber-shot handsets and will be aiming beyond the brand-loyal consumers. However, the first 5 megapixel Cyber-shot will be forced to handle a lot of pressure. It's been a year since Nokia N95 was introduced, which indisputably outruns K850 in non-cam features. Other tempting 5 megapixel mo... Full review

Pro: Battery life, coverage, 3g Network, great camera, dialup modem compatible with computer via bluetooth or usb, reliable for 1 year Con: Bugs with phone, ear phone volume, kinda bulky Using experience: 1 years This phone is great altogether, the price has dropped alot since i bought it a year and 2 months ago. I have not dropped it more than once or twice, and it still is holding together. I did manage to crack the housing near the camera on the phone but was able to buy a new one off ebay, camera takes amazing pictures, the battery life is good. Voice quality is decent, i can hear them fine most of the time but it seems as though the speaker is getting quiter, and im not getting old im only 18. The display is very nice, great color and video quality for streaming, but not as great as the newer phones out today. The only problem i have ever had with this phone is that it will stop working about once every one or two months and you have to use the sony ericsson update manager to reinstall the phones software. It doens't take long, but it can be a pain if you are not near a computer or dont have your usb cord with you. Less

I had ordered this phone from my service provider yesterday and got it in no time flat first thing today! Not the problem! After doing much research and reading plenty of reviews on this phone, I was shocked to have received this piece of junk! What a total let down. Spent a half an hour trying to set up the damn thing because the phone kept shutting down, locking and the tap menu and select sensors would not work! If these problems happened within the first 30 mins of owning this garbage then what other defects are there to this phone? Those who read this and see a lot of great and fantastic reviews on the Sony Ericsson K850i don't be suckered into it! It's a big, bulky clumsy phone and after 30 mins of trying to use the keypad my fingers were sore! If your looking for a great camera than this is the phone for you... if you want a "cell phone" with a great camera then look elsewhere! Please don't waste your money on this one folks! Less

In April 2008 I purchased a Sonyericsson K850i to replace my K790 which was worn out. The 850 was supposed to have a much longer talk and standby time which it does not. I was lucky to get two days between charges. The repair depot sent me a new battery and the improvement was only slightly better. The charging of this phone is also an issue. I cannot just plug it in and leave it, I have to wiggle the connection to get it to charge and sometimes it will quit charging soon after starting and I find myself with a dead phone in the morning when I am on the way out the door to go to work. I depend on my phone for my business and this one is not reliable. The touch screen is a good idea except for the fact that it does not always work when you touch it except when you are in call, then it constantly beeps in your ear and goes from function to function while you are trying to talk. When the call is finished you have to hit the back button a number of times to clear the screen and relock the keypad if you unlocked it and made the call in the first place. If you receive a call while the keypad is locked it does the same thing except that when you hang up you now have to unlock the keypad to clear all the other functions. This is time consuming and very annoying. When this phone is in a pocket or a case and the keys are locked it has a habit turning the photo gallery on and displaying the last picture taken which you now have to figure out how to turn off before making a call. I don’t have time to waste when I need to make a call. Also when in a case or pocket it has a nasty tendency of sending a busy signal to your caller when it is pulled out the case or pocket. Apparently it is the volume buttons on the side that do this. The navigation ring on the keypad is to close to the center touch button on the screen (select button) and when scrolling up through the contact list I find I am forever opening contacts that I did not want open. As a phone this thing has way too many idiosyncrasies but the camera works awesome. Less

not so good

Had the phone for 3 months and on the whole I liked it. My problems with the phone where mainly cosmetic. After a short time the silver paint started chipping of the keys. This was with very light use.

Sony Ericsson's are just so adaptable. Just being able to modify the message tone means a lot to me. Excellent phone, excellent camera, easy to use and stylish.

I've been using Sony Ericsson mobiles for years now and have always marvelled at how far in front of the competition and how easy to use they are. Hmmmm... My wife upgraded to this from her K800i and it's potentially a great phone but the removal of the 'joypad' and reliance on buttons to navigate is a real regression. The buttons themselves are awkward and more difficult to use. The "touchscreen" is a laughable gimick which works 50% of the time at best (S.E. you need to check on how the iphone works!) Camera was fiddly to use - 5mp is good, but doesn't compensate for faults - eg flash failing and needing to take 2 or 3 shots to ensure the subject is captured. Again the "touchscreen" gets in the way here. S.E. what on earth have you done with this once class-leading phone? Yes the new features look good on paper, but the ergonomics are a total calamity and render it hard to use and frustrating. Less
