LG is slated to show off at this week's Society for Information Display a new unbreakable and flexible 5-inch plastic OLED panel for mobile devices. The display will include a 1.0mm bezel that will allow for manufacturers to produce much lighter handsets that also give off less heat. The plastic construction makes the screen flexible and unbreakable, which would mean that consumers who accidentally drop their phones will no longer need costly display repairs or replacements. The 5-inch flexible display is designed for mobile devices, and there are talks that its next generation LG Optimus handset will be among the first devices that would tout this unbreakable display.

What Else You Need To Know

  • LG uses a different technology for its flexible display than the process employed by fellow South Korean tech giant Samsung, which recently had problems with mass production of flexible displays.
  • LG is also revealing the first 7-inch FHD touchscreen display that is based on Oxide TFT, which is touted to provide low-power-consumption, extremely thin displays.
  • The Society for Information Display’s annual show started Sunday in Vancouver, Canada and will end Thursday.
