Acer Dismisses Windows RT but Touts Windows 8 Tablet
TN

Acer won't be introducing anything with Windows RT until there's a new version of this operating system. "To be honest, there's no value doing the current version of RT," Acer President Jim Wong told CiteWorld. At one point, the company had plans for a Windows RT tablet but has indefinitely delayed its release. Acer though is still bullish with respect to tablets running the full-blown Windows 8 operating system. Acer recently unveiled the Iconia W3, the world's first mid-size tablet with Windows 8. Acer, which sells both Windows 8 and Android tablets, expects Windows 8 models to contribute 25% of the company's tablet sales.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Windows RT is designed for power-saving ARM-based tablets; but, unlike the Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets, Windows RT devices are unable to run legacy and desktop programs.
  • The $380 Iconia W3 features a dual-core Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, 8.1-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800, 32GB internal storage, 2MP rear cam, 8 hours battery life (average) and 1 USB 2.0 port.
  • Acer's Wong believes that the Windows 8 market is starting to pick up after a slow start.
  • Aside from the W3, Acer recently unveiled the $169 Android-running Iconia A1 tablet.
