Why are the pictures taken from the Motorola Theory dark?

In the camera viewfinder screen, press Options > Resolution. Here are your options:
-1280x960
- 640x480
- Picture ID

Choose 1280x960 to get the biggest size possible.

Maybe you where somewhere with weak light source, and that caused your photos to go dark.
