Bell intros Samsung VICE 3G

Allan David Reyes (1007 days ago)

The North American region isn’t usually associated with the world debut of mobile phones, but once in a while, there’s a change in the norm as such is the case with the Samsung VICE 3G. It’s making its world debut in Canada via Bell, and I must admit, it does look like a stunner.

samsung-vice-3g

What may look like a typical handset at first glance, the Samsung VICE 3G actually comes with a slide-out full QWERTY keypad. It also features a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, GPS, threaded SMS, and expandable memory of up to 8GB in capacity. In addition to that, it also comes with the fully integrated Bell Media Player, access to Bell’s 3G mobile services such as Full Track Music, Live TV and GPS Nav, and a totally customizable user interface. As an added bonus, buyers will also get a free decal to personalize their new Samsung phone. The Samsung VICE 3G is available in blue/silver or white/red colored variants for $49.95 on a 3-yr contract, $99.95 on a 2-yr contract, $199.95 for a single year, and $249.95 contract-free exclusively on Bell.

Of course, this is still no match to the groundbreaking Palm Pre set to be released later this year, but this is, nonetheless, a decent option for those in dire need of a new mobile phone right now.

Samsung VICE 3G mobile handset makes worldwide debut in Canada

New messaging device featuring slide-out QWERTY keyboard available in Canada exclusively with Bell Mobility

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 8 /CNW/ – Samsung Electronics Canada and Bell Mobility today announced the launch of the new Samsung VICE 3G mobile handset. The new messaging centric device, making its worldwide debut in Canada on Bell Mobility’s 3G high speed wireless network, comes equipped with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for easy text and email messaging, and Bell’s distinctive user interface with one-click access to social networking sites.

Canadians have embraced text messaging, sending approximately 77 million per day. The Samsung VICE’s slide out QWERTY keyboard makes typing those messages a breeze.

“Samsung’s VICE is the ultimate tool for text-happy Canadians,” said Paul Brannen, General Manager, Wireless Terminal Division, Samsung Electronics Canada. “This fun and affordable handset addresses the unique needs of those who enjoy staying connected through social networking sites, instant messaging, mobile browsing, email and texting.”

The Samsung VICE delivers a complete mobile experience with features like a 2 megapixel camera, the fully integrated Bell Media Player, access to services like Full Track Music, Live TV and GPS Nav. The handset also includes up to 8 gigabytes of expandable memory, HTML web browsing and one-click access to popular sites like Facebook.

“In addition to text and email capabilities, the Samsung VICE offers clients an affordable way to access Bell Mobility’s extensive variety of 3G mobile services like Live TV, GPS Nav and Full Track Music,” said Adel Bazerghi, Senior Vice President of Products at Bell Mobility. “And with Bell’s new, totally customizable user interface, accessing the VICE’s great features is simple and fun.”

Along with offering clients fast access to their favourite applications and services, Bell Mobility’s original user interface delivers dynamic information like weather, sports and news updates directly to the VICE’s home screen.

To celebrate the launch, the first 20,000 purchasers of the Samsung VICE will receive their choice of 1 of 50 free decals designed for personalizing the handset, enabling users to truly make it their own.

Available in blue with silver or white with red, the Samsung VICE is available exclusively from Bell for as little as $49.95 on a three year contract or $249.95 without a contract.

I just bought this phone last week. My contract was up with bell and I had credit towards a new phone. This phone had exactly what I was looking for: Number buttons on the face with a slide out keyboard for texting.

This phone is absolutely amazing and one of the best phones I’ve owned. Everything is easy to use and very fast.

I don’t think its clunky or fat. Bare in mind that it has a slide out keyboard. I compared it to my friends sony phone and it was thinner then his (which had no keyboard).

    Absolutely great phone IMO!

So is this phone a good buy? Cause as of now i have a samsung m520 and i am in need for an upgrade. I am currently looking at purchasing the Vice or the Slyde(however its spelled). Which one would you guys rather get.(Sorry for asking alot but i really dislike wasting money are shitty items…)

I just got a Vice the other day as I wanted a phone with MP3 capabilities as well as a full keyboard. I love it, but the major flaw I’ve found is that it will NOT talk to our computers so that I can upload songs (and it didn’t come with a memory card) I’ve talked to tech support and was told to take the original phone back and get a new one. Which I did, and the new one has the same problem. It’s not the cord, as it makes the ‘bloop’ noise when you plug it into the phone and computer. Very frustrating and I will be taking it back today for something else.

I bought the vice today and I love it the only problem is I didn’t get a decal code. The paper was there but the code spot was empty.

Just bought the new Vice, had a free upgrade for a new phone, like to text, thought I would try the full key board, a little heaver then my last, but that is ok. Yes the key board is a little flat, can get use to that too. Waiting for my free decal in the mail, can’t wait to put it on my phone and be original!!! Don’t like the fact that it doesn’t come with a clip to hook on to my pocket. I guess that is why they make the ring tones so loud!! Look forward to using it lots. Oh and if your old phone has a memory card, take it out and put it into your Vice, it should fit, and a decal is like a car wrap or a special sticker that you get to put on your phone!! Thanks for the web link for the manual

I have a samsung vice , i do love it. The only problem is my pictures will not save to my memory card. They will only save to my phone. Not very impressed, i tried the memory card with another phone & it works , just not with mine.

Does anyone know how to load your contacts from a mac onto the vice? I don’t want to have to input them manually!

Jonele, I believe there is a setting in there somewhere you have to choose, “save to memory card” instead of save to phone. Its in the camera…settings and info…auto save…and then press to memory card, that should do it!

I had the samsung m500 and most of the settings are actually similar, so this phone was quite easy to me, read the manual and that helped out with the rest of the confusion.
And for those who are complaining about the fact there is no zoom like they claim there is….THERE IS A ZOOM, read the manual, and figure it out before giving this phone a bad review about it…thats what cameras are for anyways.

I still love this phone, and im glad i got it, cuz I hated ALL the other phones that Bell has. Marjority were all LG and I refuse to get LG!

I can figure out how to put my ringer so when i get a call, it rings, but when i get a text it just vibrates. Does anyone know how to fix that? BTW I LOVE THIS PHONE!

Hey, I just got the samsung vice phone last week and it’s great. I’m getting to use to it. It’s way better than my previous cell phone! Since im still getting to know my new cell phone, can i use some of my songs as a ringtone?? I tried to find a way, but it’s not working… Can anyone HELP??? Thanks =)

I found that my pics would not save to the memory card either. Try this (don’t know why it works, it just does) Take a video on your memory card first then your pics will save without any trouble.

This is my new phone after dealing with a flip phone without a keyboard and I have to say it makes texting quite easy. The only issues I have with this phone is it doesnt work in basements the signal is very very weak and I am always losing text messages among the previous weeks texts which makes me have to search to find it. I just received my decal, it looks pretty but it doesn’t cover the whole phone and there is a white trim.

Just got my Vice the other day and I don’t know if its just me, but I cant seem to get my voicemail working and yes I do have it in my plan. I have looked at the user manual and held down 1 to set it up, but all it keeps doing is calling my voicemail. Does anyone know how I can fix this?? Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Christine:

I’m with Bell, and i dont know if this is the name for all other servie providers.

I had to dial the pound key (#) then my phone number (with areacode)

    ex: #1-555-364-1234

From there, you should be able to access your voicemail :)

I have had the new Vice for about 4 months now and I absolutely LOVE this phone.

It does have a few issues I have encountered are more technical malfunctions and one issue I found with my provider (Bell).

Since the Vice has internet and instant messaging capabilites, don’t be lured in by your phone provider saying “Yeah, if you sign up for unlimited internet, it includes the IM feature”. It actually DOESN’T. An internet subscription and an IM subscription are not the same thing.

I have the unlimited browser option, which is great. I downloaded EBUDDY mobile messenger and aside from “allowing something to access multimedia” a thousand times, it works great.

Now, here are the technical issues I have been encountering:

1.) Randomly, the phone will lock up. Whether it’s in the middle of texting, on the web browser etc.. (It has NOT happened while in a phone call), the screen becomes a bit brighter, freezes and after about 5 – 15 seconds, unfreezes and gives me a “searching for signal”, and then works fine.
This happens regardless on signal strength, which makes no sense. After talking to Bell, they suggested two things: removing the battery and letting the phone update itself and if that didn’t work, sending it away to be “repaired”. I have done the first, but don’t really think it’s something they can fix, no one at Bell has heard of this happening.

2.) While sending text messages, regardless of them being local or long distance #’s, I will send a text message and it will be sent back to me. It is sent back looking like the original recipient sent it to me in a text, yet it is the same message I typed.

    Lastly:
3.) This is the most recent issue, I will go to make a phone call (local or long distance) and the call connects, and then automatically starts to beep multiple times, the exact same tone on when your call is disconnected, or signal fades. The recipient doesn’t receive my call, so it doesn’t go through.

Those 3 issues aside, I love my phone!!!!!

I chose my decal after I purchased it but ended up taking it off my phone and throwing it out. I found that hair and other things get stuck to the edges of the decals over time. I invested in the hard case that is available for it and love it!!! It protects the edges of the phone, the back side (protecting the surface) and since it comes with a screen protector (which I would advise to trim LARGER Than your screen), the only things exposed are the buttons and wheel.

Overall, the Samsung Vice is an awesome phone. I would definitely recommend it for those who love texting.

I also forgot to add that the Bluetooth feature works great in my car. I have a 2010 Hyundai Genesis and it picked up instantly on the phone’s signal when Bluetooth was enabled.

In regards to the voicemail, pushing one on your phone and ‘talk’, will automatically call your voicemail.

Has anyone had an issue with the VICE for the following issues?

I have an intermitted problem, where I do not receive texts or voicemails until I make a call out….this has been happening to my over the last 2 weeks. Once I make an out going call the notification that I have texts and/or voice mail will show

Also I have tried calling my cell from my land line and it goes straight to voice mail even when the phone is on

I just bought the phone today, great buy I love it! full internet use, can buy games/ringtones/music, (I have my ways of getting them free) but I read that some people have troubles with their pin password or whatever, when I tried mine it didn’t work, so I kept trying different ideas and it worked when I typed in the last 4 digits of my phone number. =] hope that helps

    hey

i just got my vice. I was wondering if you can change the limit of 140 characters per text? It won’t continue into a 2nd text so after 140 characters i have to send it then bring up a new text message to finish.

I got my Vice at the end of June. I am still not happy with the typepad for texting. I also have a blackberry and compared to that, typing on the Vice is painful. They keys still don’t give easily enough. I have seen much better on other phones with slide out keypads. Otherwise, I have the same issues Lauren has – the random freezing. I find that if you get a text and then hit quit instead of reply, you’re more likely to freeze. If you switch from landscape to portrait mode, a freeze may occur as well.

The calling out issue is a network issue – I had Bell before, then Rogers, now back to Bell (only for cost – service at Rogers is WAY better). Bell definitely drops calls much much more than Rogers and also does the weird bit when you call and you don’t hear any ringing.

You can text on a phone rather easily without a slide out keypad like this one if the keys are nice – I would not recommend this to people who love to text and send up to 50+ msgs a day like I do often.

The OS is typical Samsung – looks pretty but as you get used to it, there really is not much under the packaging.

Could be worse. It’s a phone. But not worth any type of hype at all!

Also, I am subscribed to the Fun20 plan but my ability to receive photo messages stopped working 2 months ago. Bell can’t figure it out. Anyone else have this issue? I have spent about 2 hours + on the phone with them trying to resolve. I can send/receive plain text and can send photo/video messages. Just can’t receive photo/video messages as of mid-August.

I got my Vice about a month ago and its got its issues
    1. Sometimes it freezes up for about ten seconds.
    2. Sometimes itll send your message back to you.
    3. HATE the qwerty keyboard on it. the only time i use it is when t9 doesnt have a word i need
    4. My spinner is stuck and wont spin anymore

Lauren, it shows the same text message you had before because you have recieved a duplicate message. Meaning someone you are texting, has sent you a text that he/she has already sent you. Exit, go into your messages, and scroll through them until you find it as a highlighted new messages.

and my phone does the same thing where it freezes, gets brighter then comes back

I got my Vice in August and it didnt take long for me to realize how much of a bad buy it was. I never use the slide out keyboard the buttons are to flat and close together to type messages, Freezes all the time, The issue with duplicate messages makes me clear my inbox almost every other day, and i am still unable to get the bluetooth to work on a consistant basis. So to sum it up i hate the phone and am glad i get to upgrade in 8 more months

I’ve had my Samsung Vice 3G for nearly 7 months. I was told to upload/download music & pictures from the phone to computer & vice versa I only had to connect the USB cord included to the back of my tower & away I go. Baloney. Then I was told I needed to download Samsung drivers for the USB to work with the phone. I looked all over & repeatedly heard from electronics professionals that the majority of these smartphones do not come with downloadable drivers, I must purchase a memory card reader to interface with the computer. The phone (on a Bell Mobility service plan) is supposed to be occassionally updated. I refuse to pay for more “add on” services (all these add ons make for a HUMONGOUS bill) and have elected not to subscribe to “data” packages for the phone. Software or phone updates can be automatically launched if I did have a data package. Again, I should be able to do this through my home computer by connecting the cellphone to the provided USB cord. I looked through Bell Mobility website for Samsung Vice 3G &came across information which says I had to download & install Microsoft active sync, to connect the phone to my PC thru the USB cord. I’ve done this, & each time I connect the phone, the Activesync program reads “not connected”. I’m about ready to throw the phone out the window, except I’m still on contract & I got it for the conveniences & perks (I regularly use texting, camera, voice memo/memo pad & video/audio recording). I figure it’s like 4 devices in one. But I’m about ready to scream cuz I see everyone else with a Samsung Vice using it like an MP3 player & storing picture/video files to their computer from the phone etc. I know they have data packages & have done it all through the phone’s internet & mobile browser capabilities. But there’s supposed to be a way that I can do it without all the additional service fee’s, but I can’t get ANYTHING to work! HELLLLLLP!!!!!!!!!!

Yvone, not sure if this will help with your problem or not, but to connect my Vice to my computer, I plug the USB in, then on the phone go to “Entertainment” – “Memory Card” – “Connect to PC” and then it works.

Hi Megan: Thanks…but already know this. I’d contacted Samsung & they told me. I’ve been ripping tracks from my extensive collection of CD’s & storing it to the phone.

Now the only trouble I’m having, is when I open the mass storage device on my computer (e: drive), I can see all my picutre, music & video files. I’m having trouble with the video files. They are a “sspx689.3g” (.3g files). My computer does not recognize the file extension”.3g”. I don’t know if it’s because I tried to convert the video files (prism video converter from NCH software; trial download) I can get them to play under my Windows media player (VERY GRAINY; terrible quality) but there is no audio). I have Nerosoftware (photosnap viewer etc.) installed on my computer. I haven’t used 1/2 of it, & I’ve found they’re only “trialware”. Unfortunately, I haven’t got any money to subscribe to an MPEG decoder. I don’t know what any of that is really. I don’t get why I can click on the picture files (from my cellphone) & they open no problem…but I can’t get the same with the video files. It’s very frustrating & time consuming. I did some “video diaries” of my court case, I want to upload them to send to a fellow advocate in the field.

    The phone is nice, however;
It freezes, it’s slow, it’s web browser often doesnt work, it shuts off, some of the games dont work after you use them a couple times, and again, it freezes.
I’d say it freezes and shuts off at least 3 times a day.
    REGARDLESS.
    It’s a good phone.
    Despite all the issues…
I had the Samsung m540 before this, and I loved it, I don’t like this one as much, but it’s still nice.

Lauren, below you mentioned these two things. I had those happen to my Vice and eventually the phone just stopped responding. I sent it away and they replaced the inside of the phone because the hardware was faulty.

Those above issues are now resolved, (after 3 months of waiting!) but now when I press the centre button to read a text and scroll using the spin wheel, my screen will go black, then come back and go black again. Whether I slide the keyboard out or back in, it stays that way until I move the spin wheel back to normal. I’m really getting angry with this phone, I want my Rogers phone back, at least it didn’t have this many problems!

I love my vice3G the only problem i have with it is that… when my phone in in my pocket or purse etc it will send texts randomly.. anyone know if there is a lock button or a way to stop this from happening on it so this don’t happen and drive my friends nuts lol and how do i save certain text msg’s to my phone so they will not get deleted…????
Other then that i love it.

I as well did not get a manual with the phone.. What is up with that??

Nicole: 2 things in response to your questions. You must get alot of text messages & it’s possible your phone is on a “default” setting to “auto delete”. Meaning, it will automatically erase the oldest messages to make room for more. If you want to “disable” this feature, go into your menu…click “settings”. Click #3 for “Messages”…scroll down to #4 where it says “autodelete”, then just press the silver button, it will say “on or off”…select whichever option u want (press centre button to save option).

#2-There’s an option for text messages (use soft key on right side, options menu will appear) which says “lock message”; “lock all messages”. I’m not sure, exactly, what this does…this could be the feature you’re looking for to prevent your phone from sending messages in your purse.

Unfortunately, my mom learned a VERY expensive lesson about data charges (before we called Bell & had that locked out). The cellphone case has a magnetic closure which incidentally can cause the phone to glitch or malfunction. Just pulling the Vice phone out of the case has often engaged the camera or random calls, different things when no buttons were pressed. It’s well known that any magnetic field near electronics or cellular technological devices can wreak havoc and/or ruin the technological component. I’ve read consumer reports on frequent glitches with the Vice which we are now experiencing. One is after selecting to delete an individual block of text messages, the phone screen will flash & freeze, then it erases ALL THE TEXT messages, disengages from the “frozen screen” & resumes normal functioning.

I have an IBM Netvista computer with Windows XP professional operating system. I link my cellphone to the computer to upload & download pictures via the USB cable included with the phone. My system, won’t play the sspx.3g video files, however I’ve been able to circumvent this by uploading video’s to facebook which has newer technology & properly compresses the video files with the appropriate codecs.

I’ve come to learn that my operating systems media player (Windows 11 media player) is not recognizing the sspx.3g or sspx.3gp file extensions or something. It tells me the codec used is not supported. I had Nero software which would previously run the pictures & video file; but I’d have no audio. The Nero software was ‘trial ware’ (didn’t know this, initially, when installed). I cannot afford to subscribe to on-line programs to run the files…is there any FREE software which I can download & install which will run the VICE 3G’s cellphone video’s so I don’t have to keep using Facebook as a medium. Also, facebook has limited file storage capacity…I have 2 important court video dialogues which cannot be run on Facebook because the file size exceeds their maximum of 20 MB’s. I’m also very concerned about “privacy” having the video’s uploaded to my facebook profile for my own viewing, despite being vigilante about setting “restricted” viewing privileges through my facebook security settings.

I’ve spent innumerable hours (which is frustrating & I don’t always have) trying to find something to play these video files on my computer. I’ve even tried to convert the video’s using Pixillion conversion software (14 day trialware)…it worked a little bit, then things went kaplooey.

Brian: All the things you described seem to be “part & parcel” with having the Samsung Vice 3G phone. Overall, I agree with you it’s a good phone. I’m a basic person..I like having variety, choice & option, but when it comes to cellphones & digital technology nowadays there’s soooo much it can drive one MAD. I prefer to not be sooo overwhelmed by the variables & limit decision making to necessity. Despite the “glitches” with the phone, which I feel are easily overcome & only about 2-3 particular things…the Samsung Vice has enabled me to do things which previously I could not…and replaces the need for about 5 separate devices (camera, videocamera, digital memo recorder, MP3 player & phone). Just having the camera, phone & video in itself makes it a WORTHWHILE investment & I think it may be less “plagued” than the Blackberry Pearl…someone I know ranted so BAD about her Blackberry she accrued a small following who all had the similar complaint. I think with all new technology….even if prepped for mass marketing…there’s always “bugs” to be worked out, & in future models they’ll just about have it perfected.

I mean, there’s automobiles that have technological glitches after hitting the roadways of our continent on account of everything being controlled by “microchip” technology; hence the inexplicable exceleration of Toyota vehicles leading to a mass recall & much grief for the company. Everything in the world we use today for convenience is pretty much manmade, & MAN sure isn’t infallible.

@Nicole, you can get the user manual here:

    http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/detail/detail.do?tab=support&group=mobile&dType=D&type=mobile-phones&menu=download&vType=R&model_nm=SCH-R561&model_cd=SCH-R561ABABMC&subtype=all-phones&mType=UM&prd_ia_cd=01012200&disp_nm=Samsung%20VICE&acc_ia_fl=

As for saving particular txt messages, go to the message you want to keep so it’s open, select Options then select “Lock”

As for locking the phone itself, mine defaults to lock-type mode after a few seconds of inactivity. (Not sure how to set/change that). I have to select * and the C button to unlock. But if someone sends a text, and the phone is set so that the message pops up automatically, it “unlocks” the phone automatically and “your purse” can accidentally reply or call people. One way to avoid this (maybe there are better ways, but…) is to go under “Settings” then “Messages” then “Notification” and change it to “Icon only”… it’ll take a few more seconds to get to your texts to read (you’ll have to go into the Messages menu), but it’ll prevent your phone from starting conversations on its own ;)

    Hope that helps!

    @Yvonne,

Not sure if you figured this out on your own yet or not (I hadn’t tried uploading any before now), but you can use QuickTime to play the .3g2 movie files. I uploaded mine to my computer and they played no problem. :)

(sorry it’s not a more timely response!)

Hey Megan….do u know how I get my 3-way calling, call waiting or speakerphone to work on the Vice?

Thanks for the info about “quicktime” player…it plays the video files now, but here’s the compromise. The video quality is grainy, very poor (audio is ok; audio’s good). My cellphone doesn’t play the video this degraded, but sometimes audio isn’t so great. When I uploaded some diary logs to facebook (personal viewing). Facebook uses a youtube like videoplayer…I didn’t get such grainy/poor video quality. So what’s the catch with that & quicktime?

I really wanted something with great digital effect/video play…like my Nero software. Unfortunately, Nero would play the video but no audio. I can’t win for trying :(

any ideas or suggestions what’s going on with my mom’s & daughter’s Samsung Vice 3G phones. Both are having trouble with the battery….my mom complains hers won’t hold a charge; now my daughter says her charger won’t charge her phone, it’s not charging. I can’t even reach my teen to help troubleshoot the problem, because her cellphone is dead, it won’t charge. I hate to have to go through Bell, they want added money to send it away (no insurance, warranty is up I think-had the phone’s 1 year). Bull if you ask me. So idk what to do? I can’t reach my child now (doesn’t live at home-long distance on landline & I’m not allowed to call the house, that’s why the cellphone on a family network, to stay connected).

So I bought this phone a year ago, I have a 3 year contract and I am really regretting it. I have the exact same freezing and searching for signal which is annoying as well as the 140 text maximum. But I have a more recent problem that is most definately annoying:

My screen for no apparent reason goes completely black, you can see a faint glow from the back, the buttons work, there is sounds but I have absolutely no visual. The screen will come and go as it pleases. I have not dropped it in water or splashed it. The most it has encountered would be sweat…. don’t think that should be enough to cause this issue. I have a year and a half left on this contract and am wondering if anyone has any tips about how to fix this issue. Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

    Thanks!=D

Lizza: I went through this for almost a year when I first got the Samsung Vice. You have to make sure the USB cord with the phone is plugged into your computer tower or laptop (whatever u use_make sure you’re USB hub is properly activated on the computer). Then on the VICE’s main menu, go to where it says “entertainment”. Press the centre button, scroll down to where it says memory card…press that, then press #1 “Connect to PC”. U should get a black screen on the Vice display, with a little computer icon & it will say ‘connecting’. Then on your computer desktop, click the “My Computer” icon, then look for your :E drive…then right click on the :E drive. It should open & show you DCIM, Music, Filestore. DCIM is the photo where your cellphone photo’s are stored onto the micro SD memory card. Click on DCIM, you’ll then see a folder appear labelled, 100SSMED…click on that, then you’ll see all the thumbnails of your photo’s show up…then you just right click on whichever photo’s you want & select “copy” or “move”…you can then transfer or copy the images to your computer….this works the same if you take a cellphone video…but I’ve found the .3G2 files cannot be played without using Quiktime. No other program will recognize them.

At first when you connect the Samsung Vice to your computer an “install wizard” might open up…don’t worry about that…just click cancel, because this phone isn’t recognized by most computers, there’s no software available for download or interphase with the phone, it just confuses the computer. But what I’ve said works…it’s listed in the Samsung Vice manual which is only available from the Samsung website as a downloadable .pdf file. I’ve found the manual instructions for “syncing” the phone doesn’t work. I had to use my Windows Media Player 11, rip CD’s, drag/drop the files & then click on “sync” under the media centre to get music on my phone…now I can use it as an MP3 player. I have uploaded, downloaded movie torrents to the phone…even converted some of the .avi files to a recognized Samsung Vice format (MP4 or WMA) but the movies wouldn’t play on the phone (????)

Sara & everyone having problems with the screen winking out…going completely black then coming back. These are common issues with the phone. It’s got “techno glitches” or quirks. I think it has to do with the technology…the Vice was one of the first set of 3G cellphones on the network. Since Bell’s introduction of the Vice, “smartphones” have exploded on scene. I’m also on a 3 year contract (family network). All of us have had similar episodes to what you’re describing. You just have to put up with it, wait for the screen to clear. I’ve even had the phone go all white with blue lettering; it froze & I couldn’t get anything for nearly a day…couldn’t use it to call.I figured out a trick to RESET the phone. Take the BATTERY OFF for a few minutes, then put it back on. You may have to charge the phone a little after doing this. It should clear things up. Also, if you don’t know, the phone has to be “updated” every once in awhile. If you have a data/mobile browser package, then you can automatically do software “updates” from your phone. If you don’t pay for data/mobile browser I haven’t figured this out. I can’t get access to Bell support because I don’t hold the contract account. I’ve tried looking all over Bell.ca for this phone mode…no help. I have discovered that after an extensive period of time, if you don’t update your phone, the phone will do it itself…that’s why the white screen with the blue lettering that said “updating”. There are other glitches with the phone…my mom turns her phone on & it sends a text message to the last person she called or texted. Recently pissed off my daughter cause she got her “text alert” ring during a Driver’s Education class….there are other things that were always happening. Eventually most of the glitches stopped. New technology is never perfect (full of BUGS).
