We already knew that Sony Ericsson was in trouble, and the sales figures for Q1 2009 only serves to further support that fact.

sony-ericsson-ouchSony Ericsson has reported a pre-tax loss of €358 million which is down by a significant 36% compared to the same time last year. Their gross margin is also now just 8% which has slide by a huge 29% from what they were able to accomplish in the early part of 2008. Of course, this was somewhat expected already, and with mobile phone giant Nokia also struggling in Q1, it is no surprise that Sony Ericsson is likewise not experiencing the best sales quarter in their storied history in the industry.

They are, however, optimistic of the future pegging their hopes that their new line-up headlined by the Idou 12-megapixel camera phone will help them stage a comeback this 2009. There was another phone mentioned, but apart from a possible May 28th debut, the details regarding that one is still pretty scarce at the moment.

Well, what can we say? We applaud Sony Ericsson’s optimism despite their abysmal performance in Q1, but we highly doubt that a handful of handsets will help them improve on their current standing.
