There are 43 Nokia devices running on the S60 3rd Edition platform, and its that same number of devices that will soon support the latest version of Mail for Exchange.

Nokia has just announced that all S60 3rd Edition-running mobile devices will be made compatible and work seamlessly with Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync. Currently, only selected Nseries and Eseries phone have this feature, but with Nokia’s latest announcement, that means approximately 80 million mobile phone users worldwide will now be able to take advantage of the Microsoft Exchange Server to connect to their email while on the go. According to Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President of Markets, Nokia:

The Nokia-Microsoft collaboration to bring corporate mobile email to businesses and mobile professionals is truly unbeatable. No other device manufacturer provides the wide range of devices that we have which immediately mobilize the hundreds of millions of email accounts from Microsoft Exchange.

Even though Exchange ActiveSync can be found in other mobile devices as well, Nokia users will have the benefit of accessing features that are currently not available in other Exchange ActiveSync-capable devices. What exactly are these features? Setting email priorities, receiving alerts for meeting request conflicts, a standalone global address list application to search for a colleague's contact details quickly, downloading and editing all types of attachments (and not just image files) are just some of the features Nokia users can look forward to with their Exchange ActiveSync enabled device.

Unfortunately, while it was mentioned that new and future models will have this feature installed already, there's no mention on how current qualified Nokia users can take advantage of this update. Nonetheless, this is still a positive turn of events. Will other mobile phone makers follow as well? Let’s wait and see.
