Qantas has allowed on-the-air cellphone use during one flight. Voice will be disabled, but texting and wireless emails will be allowed. These will be GSM phones that will be tested during a commercial flight by a Qantas Boeing 767. The testing will last 3 months, and when it proves successful, Qantas may go on to testing wireless voice calls during a flight. It has been surmised that the real reason why cellphones are banned during flights is the ability of a cellphone user to irritate his neighbors.
