Apple CEO Rules Out iPhone Phablet, Hates Google Glass
Other

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage at AllThingsD's D11 conference to answer questions on a range of topics, including the iPhone, wearable computers, iOS 7 and Android's market dominance. Cook said Apple only makes one new iPhone every year to avoid losing focus by producing multiple versions of the phone. "Winning has never been about making the most" was Cook's response when asked about Android's bigger market share over Apple. Apple's not slowing down on innovation and has "several more game changers", according to Cook. Amid rumors of an iWatch, Cook confirmed that Apple's looking into wearable technology but he says Google's Project Glass would likely fail to gain mass appeal.

What Else You Need To Know

  • "I don't know a lot of people that wear them that don't have to," Cook said, referring to Google Glass.
  • When asked by Apple doesn't have a 5-inch handset or phablet, Cook says having a large screen would involve trade-offs with respect to the battery life and the colors.
  • Cook didn't rule out making multiple iPhone models in the future, saying, "We haven't so far, that doesn't shut off the future."
  • Cook said Apple sold 85 million iPhones and 42 million iPads in last two quarters.
  • As to the possibility of major acquisitions given that Apple has a cash hoard of a whopping $141 billion, Cook said, "We're not currently looking at a big one, but we're not opposed to doing that."
  • Cook announced that the company has tapped former EPA chief Lisa Jackson to head Apple’s environmental efforts.
