If you forgot your password or unlock pattern, but still have access to your Google Recovery Account, then you can just click on ‘forgot password?’ will take you to a screen where you will be required to enter your Google Account user name and password. You'll need to input the same registered user name and password you use at the Google Play store. But if you even forgot your Gmail information, I think you will unfortunately resort to reformatting your phone.

If it's PIN code he forgot, you can just ask your carrier to provide you with a PUK code (PIN Unlock Key). You can call customer service and they can provide you the code over the phone. If it's the security code he forgot, he probably needs to visit the store he got his phone from and they could personally help him unlock the phone.
