What's bad

  • Poor quality front camera
  • Issues with touch sensitivity

The HP Slate 8 Pro treads directly on iPad Mini territory with its 8-inch 4:3 aspect ratio display. When compared with the original iPad Mini, the Slate 8 Pro's IPS screen holds up rather well. It has a resolution of 1600x1200 pixels, which results in a pixel density of around 250ppi. Reviewers found the display offered sharp details and vivid and brilliant colors, which led to an excellent multimedia experience. When typing on the display, however, critics ran into trouble. Android Police noticed that rapid typing caused "phantom taps" in the middle of the screen and led to SwiftKey ignoring about half of the keystrokes.

Running the show is a 1.8GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. Synthetic benchmark tests placed performance above the Google Nexus 7 and on par with the Microsoft Surface 2. During hands-on testing, experts were generally happy with the tablet's performance as there was no lag during everyday use or when playing demanding 3D games. The quad-core processor and HD display demand a lot of power, which is why HP invested in a large 5,680mAh battery. After several different battery tests, critics found that the device lasted around 9 hours of moderate usage. It comes equipped with 16GB of internal storage and a microSD slot.

The tablet sports two cameras: a rear 8MP and a front 2.1MP. The rear camera was described as "decent" in good lighting, though it was found to struggle under low light conditions especially since there is no flash. Reviewers also complained about the poor quality of the front camera, stating that it produced pixelated movies and snapshots despite its HD resolution.

Despite a couple issues, experts were still impressed with the HP Slate 8 Pro. Notebook Check states, "The HP Slate 8 Pro is not only an extremely fast tablet…it also proves to offer a smooth experience during actual usage."

Not only a powerful 8-inch tablet, but also a well-built device

from Notebookcheck

The HP Slate 8 Pro is not only an extremely fast tablet, capable of handling both multimedia tasks and demanding 3D games with ease due to its powerful Nvidia Tegra 4 quad-core SoC, it also proves to offer a smooth experience during actual usage, with no lags or unnecessary loading times - even right after booting up, it already feels very responsive. Due to a display resolution of 1600x1200 pixels, only the small HD resolution can be displayed natively on the 4:3 screen, but the display wins us over with its vivid colors, its clear pictures and its high contrast ratio. Once the HD sound sy... Full review

Android Police

Everything is fast and snappy

from Android Police

I want to love this tablet for several reasons, but for each positive quality it possesses, there's an equally as destructive flaw. The size is nigh perfect, and the 4:3 aspect ration, while initially different, is pretty fantastic. The display is probably the best I've seen on an HP tablet (which, honestly, isn't all that difficult to do), but the touchscreen bug is a huge flaw. The fact that it only has one gig of RAM is a downer, though I'm not sure I'd call it a dealbreaker – especially if HP would update this badboy to KitKat. That would likely remove all hints of hesitation. Of... Full review
