Sporting skills on Wear OS

from Pocket-lint

With good battery life from a Google Wear OS watch, the Suunto 7 is off to a good start. But it's expensive and some of the features seem at odds with their potential.

Giving you the athletic edge

from TechRadar

Great if you want a beautiful smartwatch and basic stats on your multi-sport life. However, this does require compromise as the Suunto 7 suffers from middling battery life that puts the brakes on extreme adventures Suunto is renowned for, and some baffling design choices that limits what would be an amazing piece of kit.

The Suunto 7 succeeds in two areas other WearOS watches often fail. It provides usable two-day battery life and good overall performance, but doesn’t quite manage to become a crowd-pleasing lifestyle smartwatch. That’s due to the design not holding universal appeal and the hyper-focused sports features being irrelevant to the casual fitness fan. The Suunto 7 isn’t as niche as the brand’s usual watches, but it’s still niche, and that has translated into a slight lack of focus.

Stuff

An attractive, comprehensive fitness tracker with Android Wear smarts, but a little too pricey for most

from Stuff

If you’re a fan of the Suunto 7’s sporty, rugged looks, and want comprehensive sports tracking without being fussed about regular charging, then this could very well be the niche-filling wristwear you’re after. For everyone else though, you’re better off saving some cash and springing for something a little more wallet friendly.

New Wear OS powered running watch is a Fitbit Versa 2 on steroids

With the Suunto 7, the Finnish manufacturer tries to blur the lines between smartwatches, running watches and fitness trackers, using Google's Wear OS. While I was impressed with the huge display, the offline maps and the sensor precision, the Suunto 7 doesn't fully compensate for the shortcomings of its user interface and the short-sh battery life.

Overall, the Suunto 7 is a pretty darned good Wear OS smartwatch. Indeed, in my opinion the best sports-focused device of its kind on the market and, if you like the advantages that Wear OS brings and don’t mind charging every day or so, you should go out and buy one. It looks great and is very comfortable to wear as well. However, there’s no ignoring the fact that both battery life and customisation options are limited compared with serious sports watches. That means that although I do like the Suunto 7, it’s hard to recommend wholeheartedly for those who take their sports more seriously.

DC Rainmaker

The worst company's sport watch

from DC Rainmaker

Thus, to my surprise it wasn’t actually Google’s Wear OS that let down this watch. It was Suunto’s own app…mostly. There’s no two ways about it, Suunto released this watch too early. It’s simply half-baked. The Suunto app does a fraction of what even Suunto’s own budget watches do....More

Thus, to my surprise it wasn’t actually Google’s Wear OS that let down this watch. It was Suunto’s own app…mostly. There’s no two ways about it, Suunto released this watch too early. It’s simply half-baked. The Suunto app does a fraction of what even Suunto’s own budget watches do. And that’s before we attempt to account for the $499 price tag. Which, we can’t. It’s overpriced by any market comparison you want to do – to any vendor you want to pick, and any model you want to choose. But more than overpriced, it’s underfeatured.

Coach Mag

The most sporty Wear OS watch yet

from Coach Mag

It is a good Wear OS smartwatch and might lure in users thanks to the sports tracking credentials, but the high price certainly isn’t going to help, and neither is the often frustrating user experience when interacting with Wear OS.

You win some, you lose some

from Android Authority

The Suunto 7 is a solid first effort as a full-fledged smartwatch, but I'm not convinced going with Wear OS was the right move. There are software limitations that make the Suunto 7 feel less like a traditional GPS fitness watch, and the lack of external heart rate sensor support is sure to annoy many Suunto diehards.
