Tom's Guide

A long-lasting GPS sports watch that’s rugged enough to survive Jurassic Park

from Tom's Guide

The rugged Amazfit T-Rex is an outdoor GPS sports watch with impressive battery life and costs less than $150. But its bulky design and limited smarts might not be for everyone.

If you are in the market for an affordable smartwatch that works well and is packed with features, the Amazfit T-Rex is worth the look. The watch will survive harsh conditions, and it is lightweight and comfortable to wear. Very few options at this price point also include a heart rate monitor as well as GPS. There are just enough customization options to make the watch fun to use, but again, there are no third-party apps.

Rugged and inexpensive

The G-Shock of smartwatches

In concluding our Amazfit T-Rex review, we can say this is the best in its segment of Rs 10,000 / $150. The rugged design, comfortable wearing, long-lasting battery life makes it easy to recommend. In concluding our Amazfit T-Rex review, we can say this is the best in its segment of Rs 10,000 / $150. The rugged design, comfortable wearing, long-lasting battery life makes it easy to recommend. However, it isn’t a full-fledged smartwatch in my opinion, since you can’t take actions from the notifications and there is no third-party app support. But overall, the pros outweigh the cons and I can safely say that this T-Rex isn’t going extinct anytime soon.

Rugged smartwatch done right

The Amazfit T-Rex is the perfect alternative to a conventional rugged watch like the G-Shock but with smart internals and a touchscreen display. The Amazfit T-Rex is the perfect alternative to a conventional rugged watch like the G-Shock but with smart internals and a touchscreen display. While it’s still not a full-fledged smartwatch since there’s no support for third-party apps or notification replies, it still does more than what a traditional watch can while training the same looks and form factor, and even a similar price point of a G-Shock. The Amazfit T-Rex is a modern take on a watch from the Jurassic age.

The Huami Amazfit T-Rex is not for everyone, and I would not recommend this for a daily smartwatch or fitness tracker, despite the fact that is has a lot of features for these use cases such as sleep tracking and indoor sports exercises. If you are looking for something affordable and durable to take out on longer adventures in the wilderness, though, the T-Rex should certainly be on your radar.

There’s a lot to recommend about the Amazfit T-Rex beyond just its affordable price. There’s a lot to recommend about the Amazfit T-Rex beyond just its affordable price. The built-in GPS means that you can track your workout even without your phone and with the days-long battery life you don’t have to think about charging another device on a daily basis. While fans of traditional watches are likely to be put off by the lightweight body of the Amazfit T-Rex, those who haven’t used a smartwatch yet or have used fitness trackers so far will appreciate the nearly imperceptible weight and the comfortable band.

A well-crafted and balanced smart-wearable product

In terms of functionality, the T-Rex is really closer to a smart band than to a smartwatch. A smarter, more feature-rich smart band, yet still offering all of the value and battery endurance benefits. Still, it manages to visually distance itself from the plain band look and successfully recreates an iconic watch look. The end result is impressive on multiple levels. The biggest letdown of the T-Rex overall experience is the lack of polish on a software level.

A 20-Day per charge rugged smartwatch

from G Style Magazine

That might just be a drop in the bucket however compared to everything else the Amazfit T-Rex can do especially its long lasting battery life. That might just be a drop in the bucket however compared to everything else the Amazfit T-Rex can do especially its long lasting battery life. While not as high as the GTR, the 20-day battery life is nothing to sneeze at and is still quite high compared to other watches in this group. That being said, the Amazfit T-Rex makes for a great daily smartwatch and definitely a great one for those who live a super active lifestyle. That means those who engage in activities such as mountain climbing, skiing, snowboarding, etc. It was made to be used and abused.

This Xiaomi-backed smartwatch has incredible battery life

I’d rather wear this (or a less rugged version of it) than a Wear OS watch, honestly — the software isn’t that much more limited, and the power efficiency is a huge advantage. I’m not sure exactly how Huami is making its watches last this long, but if you want a cheap smartwatch with long...More

I’d rather wear this (or a less rugged version of it) than a Wear OS watch, honestly — the software isn’t that much more limited, and the power efficiency is a huge advantage. I’m not sure exactly how Huami is making its watches last this long, but if you want a cheap smartwatch with long battery life and don’t need particularly complex functionality, this one is worthy of consideration.
