The Echo Plus still redeems itself by having a built-in hub for automatically connecting a whole bunch of smart home devices, without needing a dedicated hub for each of them. That alone makes it worth considering for someone big on home automation. Alexa is also a great voice assistant and the Echo Plus does usual voice assistant duties with aplomb. But it's best to look elsewhere if audio quality is a priority for you.

The science of good sound

The Echo Plus is $150, or about $50 more than the standard Echo. The massive boost in audio quality and stand-alone smart hub features you get are worth the extra cash. The Echo Plus is the Echo to buy in 2018.

Amazon's fanciest speaker is still a tough sell

If you're looking for an Alexa-enabled speaker with a Zigbee hub, the Amazon Echo Plus is your best bet. If you're looking for the best sound quality, the Sonos One is still the top contender.

A sound investment

from Expert Reviews

Once again, Amazon has offered steady, solid improvements with the 2018 Echo Plus. The sound is excellent for the price (though, as ever, you can always do better for more money), it’s more compact and more stylish than before and even more feature packed.

New design, better speakers

from Pocket-lint

The Echo Plus is a better Echo all-round than the standard version, but we have to say we preferred last year's design that distinguished it from the standard Echo.

New look, new audio internals

A much prettier speaker than the original Echo Plus, the 2nd gen smart home speaker also has improved audio components – even if its ZigBee internals are no longer unique.

The second-gen Echo Plus still has the hub, but it's now wrapped in a nicer design, and has a few new tricks that build on its predecessor in a few key ways.
