Pocket-lint

Great voice-assistant, not-so-great speaker

from Pocket-lint

Home Mini isn't designed as a speaker for music, though. Sure, it has a speaker, and can connect to music services, but it doesn't sound that great. But then it's not supposed to: Mini is all about voice-control and expanding the system around your home. And on that front, it achieves exactly what it sets out to do.

The Guardian

A brilliant little voice assistant speaker

from The Guardian

The Google Home Mini is all the functionality of a full-sized Google Home shrunk into a small fabric-covered pin cushion. It doesn’t sound as good, and isn’t as loud, as the bigger Home, but sounds better and is louder than Amazon’s Echo Dot.

A smaller footprint and a cheaper entry point

from Tech Advisor

We're clearly big fans of the Google Assistant, and any device that makes it more accessible to the masses is well worth a second look in our book. If budget was no option then the standard Google Home offers significantly better audio quality, but for most people budget will unfortunately come into play should they wish to set up speakers in every room of the house.

Finally, Google takes the fight to Amazon

from Alphr

The Google Home Mini would be a nailed-on five-star product if Google had only spent a couple of quid putting in a 3.5mm headphone jack in every unit. But even if that is the case, seeing its big Seattle rival packing a headphone jack in should have been enough incentive to compete, even if Google didn’t think anyone would use it.

G Style Magazine

Echo Dot has some competition

from G Style Magazine

It was smart of Google to add the Mini to its catalog of smart speakers as it goes after the Echo Dot crowd and hits that sweet price point of $49.99. It will easily be a stocking stuffer this year just like the Chromecast in the past. You aren’t getting superb audio but at this price you can only expect so much.

Taking aim at the Echo Dot

from Engadget

The Google Home Mini is both affordable and capable -- for $49 it can pull up loads of information, control your music and videos and manage a wide variety of smarthome devices. Its tiny speaker sounds better than expected, though you probably won't want to play music on it. But it does a lot for the price and provides an easy and affordable way to get the Google Assistant into your house.

Affordability comes at a cost

from SlashGear

At $49, the Google Home Mini is undoubtedly a more affordable way to wade into Google’s vision of the voice-powered world. Indeed, even with the Google Home’s recent $109 promotion, you could outfit two rooms with its Mini sibling and still have change. Whether that’s cost-effective depends entirely on your expectations of use.
