TechRadar

A powerful miniature masterpiece, but it's fiddly to use

from TechRadar

Video quality is second to none, 10MP still imagery will be good enough for most, and the tiny package makes it the perfect companion on your travels. The lack of a replaceable battery is a downer, as is the slightly confusing one-button interface, but the beautifully crisp 4K footage easily makes up for this.

The Hero Session was the first GoPro camera to do away with the need for a waterproof housing -- one of the things I've always disliked about them. The camera's tiny square design makes positioning much easier and allows you to put it in places the others won't fit. And the simple one-button control lets you start shooting almost instantly. The only thing really missing was excellent video quality, which is fixed with Hero5 Session. If you need all the features GoPro offers, you'll still want the Black, but for a tiny camera to toss in a bag and go, this is pretty perfect.

One of the best action cameras in the market right now, if you can stomach the price

from NDTV

There’s a lot to gain in upgrading from the Hero4 Session to the new model, and for professional users, it might be worth the investment. The Hero5 Session offers excellent video quality in good lighting, and plenty of shooting modes to play around with for both video and stills.

Packs great video quality into an adorable form factor

from TrustedReviews

Now that the Session has taken up a new position as the entry-level alternative to the Black, and the Silver has been done away with completely, it becomes a much more viable option. With its performance upgrade, matching the Black’s top-level resolution, it’s a far more capable action camera than its predecessor.

Alphr

Small but mighty

from Alphr

It clearly has limitations compared with the Hero 5 Black, but the adorable Session packs one hell of a punch for such a tiny action camera. Its video quality is excellent, it’s waterproof and compact, and battery life is good. I also love the voice controls, and the app works beautifully for framing and playback.

Size doesn’t matter

GoPro’s Hero 5 Session might not have all the fancy features of its action camera rivals, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a great piece of kit. Aside from a couple of niggles, most notably with its still image quality, the Session is a barebones action camera that does the job well. It’s not quite as well-rounded as GoPro’s Hero 5 Black, but if you’re a little strapped for cash, this is a great buy.

The GoPro Hero5 Session is a major upgrade over the Hero4 Session with the addition of 4K video capture. Footage quality is close to the Hero5 Black, though it lacks that camera's touch screen and some of its shooting modes, including the ability to record 4K in the SuperView field of view setting and capture 240fps video at 720p. At $300, the Hero5 Session is an excellent performer.
