What Mobile

A truly excellent premium Bluetooth speaker with brilliant sound quality and plenty of punch

With the inclusion of full 96KHz/24bit streaming support, you can also rest assured that the Libratone Zipp will be able to handle the very best file types. In testing, we found this to be very much true with excellent dynamics throughout the spectrum. Bass is full and well defined thanks to a large 4-inch neodymium woofer, with electronic tracks bursting with energy. Even the sub-bass manages to translate reasonably well, with just enough oomph to give suitable presence to the track.

A good sounding speaker with some cool features

If you can’t tell by now, we were really impressed by the Zipp. Songs have plenty of detail and even though soundstage is lacking, it gets loud enough to fill a room easily. Throw in the plethora of ways you can connect to it and there’s no reason why you should have any problem playing music through it. The app gives you plenty of functionality and the on-board controls lets you easily access plenty of features. Of course, it’s not perfect. The lag over Wi-Fi got really annoying and there could definitely be some optimization in terms of how the user interacts with the speaker overall. At $299 it’s not exactly cheap and if you’re looking for purely Wi-Fi capabilities you might be better off with something like a Sonos, but if you also want the option to pick it up and leave the house then the Zipp wins by default since it has Bluetooth. But all that aside when it comes down to it in the end I just want my speaker to sound good, and the Zipp does.

Wired

Nice sound, nice features, but tough to really love

from Wired

Great sound for a small speaker. Inside the larger Zipp, there’s a 100-watt Class D amp, a 4-inch woofer, two 1-inch tweeters, and two 4-inch passive radiators. These are all placed around the face of the cylinder so the sound spreads out in a circle. It gets very loud, and while some small...More

Great sound for a small speaker. Inside the larger Zipp, there’s a 100-watt Class D amp, a 4-inch woofer, two 1-inch tweeters, and two 4-inch passive radiators. These are all placed around the face of the cylinder so the sound spreads out in a circle. It gets very loud, and while some small speakers sound like a car horn when you crank them, the Zipp sounds pretty natural at higher volumes. I played a lot of bass-heavy jams (Erykah, Nicola Cruz, Peter Tosh) and the little thing really thumps.

There’s a lot to like about the Libratone Zipp. It takes multiroom principles and applies true portability with its built-in battery and design. Provided you’re able to maintain a wireless connection to your router, you can take the music outside into your garden. Its ability to synchronise audio from a multitude of audio sources makes it incredibly versatile and its sound quality doesn’t disappoint. There are some thoughtful features like being able to charge devices over USB and the addition of the handle if you want to hang the speaker. It's also cheaper than the Samsung R5 if you're after a room-filling 360-degree listening experience.

What Hi-Fi

An innovative multi-room option

from What Hi-Fi

The new Zipp is certainly a step on from its predecessor and falls short only marginally when compared with class leaders at this price.
