Good image quality and a variety of options, but usability should be better

The X1000V is all business; it doesn’t deal in gimmicks such as ‘shake to edit’, mobile apps or 4G livestreaming. It’s focused on top image quality. An admirable goal, but we get the feeling that all the thought might have been put into the image and cramming 4k@30fps into...More

An admirable goal, but we get the feeling that all the thought might have been put into the image and cramming 4k@30fps into an action camera, rather than the overall package and the user experience.

When it comes to Sony, the feature that is obviously above the GoPro offering is the great audio quality that allows to record audible conversations during the action, which is not the case with the GoPro Hero4 (check our video in the sound quality paragraph).

At this point I would advise to carefully read this review and select the functions and features that you like the most to make your own choice, since the image quality of both cameras is comparable (check our movies). The Sony 4K Action Cam is a very good wearable camera for shooting high quality 4K videos while performing a wide range of different action sports, including skiing.

Amazing 4K video quality, super-smooth stabilisation

The proof is very much in the pudding, though, and it’s the quality of video — both 1080p slow-mo and regular 4K — that makes the Sony FDR-X1000V worth buying. Check out some YouTube videos, try one in store, compare it to the best of the best, and you’ll come away wanting...More

Check out some YouTube videos, try one in store, compare it to the best of the best, and you’ll come away wanting one. I definitely want one. The X1000V, as an entry into the world of Action Cam, is an excellent one.

What Wearable Tech

Get crystal clear jaw dropping 4K footage of all your experiences

from What Wearable Tech

The Sony FDR X1000V 4K Action Cam is one of the most advanced action cameras in the market today. While GoPro is still the world famous brand we all know and love, Sony has quickly devised a sneaky plan to catch up to them with this camera. Granted, the camera’s menu can be hard to navigate at times and the camera does have a relatively short battery life. However, this is greatly outweighed by the impressive 4K resolution the camera projects through its world class ZEISS® lens and super fast 100 Mbps video capturing capabilities....

Whether you’re recording the breath taking view from your hot air balloon in the Swiss Alps, capturing the mystical Egyptian Pyramids in glimmering sunshine, or in another exotic location with your family, this is the perfect camera for you if you’re looking for a way to cherish all your precious memories in silky smooth ultra high definition quality.

Sony’s 4K Action Cam is very good camcorder that delivers good-looking picture quality and smooth videos, thanks to its high-bitrate capability and image stabilization. But with every camera that can shoot 4K, we ask the same question: Do you need it right now? There’s the argument that you are buying a future-proofing feature, but with this camera, it’s more of a nice bonus than a must-have. If you don’t have the hardware to view and process 4K videos, is it really a benefit? For those looking for an action cam, don’t buy it for its 4K mode, but for its really smooth, 100-Mbps videos (although you’ll need a pricey SDXC card). At the end of the day, we had fun using it, and it does produce great videos.

Just isn't quite there yet

This is by no means a knock on Sony. It's clearly moving in the right direction, and this is a company that makes some of the best camcorders around. GoPro should be worried since Sony will likely continue to close the gap even more with future action cams. The X1000V just isn't quite there yet.

Should you buy it? No. It’s been less clear with previous iterations, but this is one very easy call to make. The advantages don’t outweigh the disadvantages. At $500 it isn’t any cheaper than the GoPro Hero4 Black which shoots better video, is much easier to use, and has strong and widely available mounts. We gave it every possible chance, but there’s no contest.

Sony's 4K Action Cam gives GoPro a run for its money

from Cnet

The X1000V is a strong step forward for Sony, building on the success of the previous Action Cams. If you need high bitrate recording and image stabilization (at 1080p recording only) then this is the camera to go for.
