What's good

  • Highly portable design and long-lasting battery
  • Offers impressive sound quality for its size
  • Refined and more elegant design

What's bad

  • Expensive price
  • Somewhat boring overall look
  • No extra features

The Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker III is the latest in a popular line of good-looking, great-sounding, and high-quality bluetooth speakers from Bose. It may not have much going for it in terms of unique qualities, but most expert reviews are quick to say that it doesn't get drowned out in a sea of competition.

Its portability will let you take it pretty much anywhere you like -- it measures 4 x 25 cm (1.5 x 9.84 in.) so it can fit easily into almost any backpack. It also has a rechargeable battery that can last up to 14 hours. According to Mike Kobrin of Tom's Guide, this is one aspect where it has definitely improved significantly on the previous model.

Speaking of which, Darren Orf from Popular Mechanics says that the SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker III's "two-tone gray appearance is just boring," although it looks more sleek when you compare it to the last one. It can also be used with add-on accessory covers that cost extra money. These are fine for changing colors quickly but on the whole, they apparently seem more like an afterthought than something that was included in the original design plans.

When it comes to audio performance, the III doesn’t disappoint. Nick Guy from iLounge says that the volume level is quite acceptable, it can fill a small room with sound, and that there’s very little sound distortion. Their review ends with the following: “it’s a very nice sounding speaker with looks to match.”

Most expert reviews express the same sentiment. The SoundLink III is a tad on the pricey side but reviews indicate its worth it if you value higher quality industrial design, portability, and sound quality. Cnet’s David Carnoy said it best when he called it “The Lexus of Bluetooth speakers.” An easy product to recommend if you can afford it he says.

That big Bose sound in a very small package

from PCWorld

That Bose has crammed so much audio performance into such a small physical footprint is a testament to the company’s heritage. Bose has mastered the art of the compact speaker. If you like the Bose sound and you’re looking for a small speaker, the Soundlink III delivers.

Offers top-notch sound quality paired with good battery life

Bose manages to pack plenty of sonic punch and battery life into a slim package, improving significantly on the previous model.

Furthermore, the SoundLink III offers better clarity and volume than competitors like Jawbone's Big Jambox and Braven's 850 HD. The lack of extras like speakerphone and onboard playback controls comes as a surprise at this price. But if you can live without those amenities, the SoundLink III is one of the best portable wireless speakers you can get.

Android Authority

Puts in a good performance despite limits due to its size

from Android Authority

The Bose SoundLink 3 is indeed better than the speaker that preceded it in nearly every way. It sounds better, is louder, and has drastically improved battery life. Even in areas where it doesn’t surpass earlier Bose speakers, it certainly matches them evenly. Especially as far as competitors to Bose are concerned, this is now the speaker to beat.

With that said, the price of $299 may be a bit high for certain people, especially when the older SoundLink 2 and SoundLink Mini still offer high-quality sound at a lower price point (roughly $269 and $199 respectively). If you’re looking for the best Bluetooth speaker available from Bose, however, this is it.

Popular Mechanics

Can surely deliver in terms of sound but lacks panache

The Soundlink Bluetooth III’s design looks more sleek than what’s come before it and measures at about 5 x 10 x 2 inches, but its two-tone gray appearance is just boring. Regarding design and functionality, Bose is stubbornly stuck in the past, trending in the opposite direction than brands like Jawbone and Ultimate Ears. But when it comes to sound, the half-century old audio giant knows what it's doing.

Right now, Bose is just resting on unused potential. If Bose could somehow pair an edgier, modern look (or at least the option for one) with its high-quality sound, the competition would find it hard to match. If Bose were to broaden their scope and combine design, sound, and function into one product, its might be surprised at what could happen.

9to5Mac

A highly portable yet sturdy Bluetooth speaker

from 9to5Mac

The Soundlink III goes one step further, filling a large room and possibly annoying the neighbors in the process.

This is the best-sounding portable Bluetooth speaker I’ve heard but it isn’t appreciably better than the $100 cheaper Soundlink Mini and it is significantly less portable. Moreover, Bose didn’t fix any of the gripes I had with the Soundlink Mini.

For most people, I’d still recommend the $199 Soundlink Mini. It sounds as good 95% of the time and it is cheaper and smaller. For me, I almost never needed the extra volume or battery life that the Soundlink III included. Still, I know some will appreciate those features.

PC Magazine

Definitely a worthy upgrade to the previous model

from PC Magazine

The SoundLink III is the latest iteration of Bose's Bluetooth speaker, replacing the SoundLink II as its $299.95 (direct) wireless model. The Bose SoundLink III is a worthy follow-up to the Editors' Choice SoundLink II, offering slightly bigger, slightly warmer sound that presents plenty of detail and texture across the spectrum. If you want to spend a little bit less on a Bluetooth speaker, the SoundLink Mini is still a very good choice.

If you want to enjoy the best aspects of all worlds without compromising any of them, the SoundLink III is a roundly excellent speaker. It's functional and offers a very enjoyable, powerful sound that will satisfy most listeners, making it our newest Editors' Choice for Bluetooth speakers.

iLounge

A better version of the last model

from iLounge

We find SoundLink III to be a more attractive speaker than its predecessors. It maintains the same general look and shape, but everything has been refined, making it more elegant.

The volume level is quite acceptable, as the unit is more than able to fill a small room, and could even be suitable for outdoor use. It ramps up rather slowly, but the top level is comparable to that of the Braven speaker, and there’s relatively low distortion....

SoundLink III does sound and look better than the first two models, although it loses the built-in cover. For those willing to spend a little more than absolutely necessary, it’s a very nice sounding speaker with looks to match.

We could sit here and argue which competing models sound as good (or almost as good) for less money. However, at the end of the day, the Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker III is a high-quality product that's an easy speaker to recommend if you can afford it. Audiophiles may not be wowed, but most people will be duly impressed by the quality of the sound it produces for its size.

The fact that it’s wireless gives you a built- in ‘remote control’ i.e. your smartphone, meaning you can easily adjust the volume or switch tracks via your app – the Bose doesn’t have its own remote or special app to control the device. The audio quality is just amazing with great power; it can produce a truly massive sound – enough to power a large party. A surprising achievement considering it’s beautifully small. The bass notes really stand out and the overall sound is beautifully clear and full. Astonishing.
