The Boombox sounds okay for a portable speaker, but costs more than it should.

- Kat Orphanides, Expert Reviews

It could be a little clearer in the treble, but there’s impressive scale and a decent soundstage.

The "1-Minute" Review

With two speakers and two woofers and four passive radiators, the UE Boombox is one of the larger devices in this list. Fortunately, the design of the speaker makes it one of the most portable as well. All of those speakers combine to provide a full, crisp and expansive sound stage from a single Bluetooth device.

A rugged aluminum handle, rubberized protective panels and stainless steel grill provide plenty of protection from the bumps and scrapes of life on the road. Support for up to three simultaneous connections make it easy to stream audio from multiple devices or let your friends pick the next track as well while the 50-foot connection range lets you enjoy life without having to worry about being within range of your speaker.

One notable concern about this speaker is battery life. The rechargeable cell offers roughly 6 hours on a single charge. While this is enough for most outings or events, it certainly falls short of many of the other choices on this list. Fortunately, the included AC adapter makes it easy to plug in and charge while in use should you plan on an extended jam session.

It looks great, sounds lively and it will instantly enrich any occasion by allowing you to bring your favourite tunes along. We hope the second generation of this Bluetooth boombox will be even better, perhaps by featuring more advanced audio codecs and NFC.

The speaker has two 0.5-inch tweeters that control the treble. It has two 3-inch woofers that bring balance mid-section and high-section frequencies. Its four 2.75-inch passive radiators supply deeper and more resonant bass. With the kind of audio driver setup that the speaker has rest assured that the quality of sound that you get is outstanding.

UnleashThePhones

Versatile, loud, solid wireless speaker

from UnleashThePhones

The Logitech UE Boombox is perfect for a backyard dinner party and more than enough for an average living room or even hall. The 6 hours of battery life, means it’ll keep going for a while, and the durable chasis with it’s sleek handle means you can carry it around, enjoying the music all around your house, at a picnic or at the beach. The only issue I had with it, was that the rubber casing tends to fade and get dinged up....

If you’re looking for a versatile, loud, solid wireless speaker, I highly recommend the Logitech UE Boombox. It’s a bit pricey, but still cheaper than Bose’s offering, and will probably last you years. Definitely worth checking out.

Not quite, bit since the Bose is pretty much $299 no matter who you buy it from, and the $249 Logitech can often be found for $199, for something that is 2/3rds the price the Logitech UE Boombox comes incredibly close. And that is why the Logitech UE Boombox gets used as the reference point by which to compare the competition. The value versus quality make it undeniable.

What can I say? Logitech UE, you’ve produce another top notch piece of hardware that sits proudly on top of my portable audio hardware list. It’s not cheap at $250, but you’ll be incredibly happy with your purchase and the never look back.

There's certainly plenty of bass, which particularly complements the vibrant bass work and complex drumming of rock and metal, but treble and upper-mid-range sounds were often a little muddy. Surprisingly for a compact speaker, the sound’s fairly wide, and isn’t limited to a single sweet spot. The Boombox can output plenty of volume, but at full volume, high frequency sounds became extremely harsh. At lower volumes, the mid-range was more prominent.

Of course, no Boombox should be expected to produce anything like the sound quality required for serious listening. The Logitech would work OK for a party or background music, however. The Bluetooth pairing and transmission were right on the money, the speaker has good looks and a solid build, and its operation is simplicity itself. It has good range and can be carried from room to room as needed. If that’s what you need and serious listening is not your goal, the Logitech UE Boombox might be the answer.

You’re paying a bit extra for the sturdy, portable design, but the Logitech UE Boombox is still a good option if you’re looking for a lightweight speaker system that you can use outdoors on a regular basis.
