What's good

  • Good Bluetooth range
  • Connect two devices at the same time
  • Loud and clear audio quality
  • 3.5mm audio input for non-Bluetooth enabled devices

What's bad

  • Sound distortion with bass-heavy songs at full volume
  • Sound is not very dynamic and tends to skew to mid-range

The UE Mobile Boombox is Logitech's follow up to the Mini Boombox with a couple design and sound improvements. Measuring in at 6.1 x 11.15 x 6.66 cm (2.4 x 4.4 x 2.6 inches) and weighing a slight 298 grams, critics had no issue toting it around the house or stowing it in a backpack. While it offers Bluetooth connectivity, it also has a 3.5mm audio input for plugging in devices that do not have Bluetooth. Officially, the wireless feature works up to 50-feet, which is backed up by numerous expert tests.

Unlike its predecessor, the Mobile Boombox sports a rubberized case, which, according to reviewers, keeps the speaker from vibrating and moving too much on higher volumes. Gone are the touch-sensitive buttons. Instead, they have been replaced with three large, pressure-sensitive buttons that clearly indicate volume down, volume up and pairing.

In addition to pairing with up to eight different devices, it can also keep two of them connected at the same time. Critics found this feature especially useful as they could keep their smartphone connected for speakerphone calls and tablet for music. As a matter of course, only one audio can stream at a time.

Most reviewers were fairly impressed with the speaker's sound quality for both music and phone calls. PC Mag notes, "For its tiny size, the UE Mobile Boombox sounds loud and very clear." However, they go on to say that at the sound distorts when playing bass-heavy songs at full volume. Others mention that it the sound itself is not particularly dynamic as it skews more to the midrange. As a speakerphone, critics were able to hear calls quite clearly though CNET warns, "you'll want to keep it within a few feet of you…I could hear callers a little better than they could hear me."

For the most part, most have no problem recommending the UE Mobile Boombox. iLounge says, "its compact size, color options and other little frills make it…worthy of our strong general recommendation…"

Portable enough to be taken anywhere, yet powerful enough to provide good-quality audio

from Make Use Of

Before reviewing the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, I never considered owning a Bluetooth speaker. The bottom line is, I now do. I decided to keep this unit for myself and pay for it, rather than part with my newfound way of listening to music.

The simplicity of its controls, clean design, and solid wireless performance are all welcome; though they could be further improved upon, this model represents a solid jump upwards from its Mini Boombox predecessor. It’s worthy of our strong general recommendation, and should be given particularly serious consideration if size trumps sonic performance for your particular needs.

For its size the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox packs in very good sound that is also quite loud thanks to twin 1-inch drivers. The sound quality is very good for a portable Bluetooth speaker, with some low-end and clear highs. This speaker will not replace a larger system, but it blows the doors off of integrated laptop, tablet and smartphone speakers.

Like the Jambox, but half the size and half the price

I spent two months testing a baker’s dozen of these tiny speakers, and this UE Mobile Boombox was my favorite of the entire lot. And not only because of the sound, which is great, but also because of all the little things: the shape and size, the materials, the ease of pairing, and the battery life.

In the end, the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox is thoughtfully designed and offers some small but significant improvements over the earlier Mini Boombox.

Typically, when a company improves a product, I'd grade it a little higher than the earlier model. But in the last year, a plethora of tiny Bluetooth speakers have come onto the market for around this price and while I think the Mobile Boombox is better than most in this price range, its sound quality doesn't do enough to put it head-and-shoulders above the rest. So this gets 3.5 stars -- just like the last model. It's very good for the money, just not great.

You won't find a better all-around package close to its price

from PC Magazine

The Logitech UE Mobile Boombox doesn't sound quite as clear as more expensive Bluetooth speakers, but its size is downright tiny, its price is right, and its speakerphone feature works better than most. If you're willing to compromise pure sound quality slightly for extreme portability and price, the UE Mobile Boombox is the speaker for you.

Clear sound for its diminutive size

At $100, the UE Mobile Boombox should fit nicely into most people’s budget, at least in terms of purchasing a Bluetooth portable speaker. That said, don’t let its seemingly low price tag, relatively speaking of course, obfuscate its capabilities. Sure, the speakerphone is the portable speaker’s biggest drawback, but its simplicity, quality, and refinement are nothing less than I’d expect from the Ultimate Ears brand.
