Key points

  • The CRTC, Canada's telecom regulator, has approved new deadlines for two Telus mobile coverage projects in Quebec funded through its Broadband Fund.
  • The first project covers about 35 kilometres of Routes 204, 283 and 389 and seven communities, including Lac-Frontière, Saint-Adalbert and Sainte-Félicité. The new finish date is December 29, 2026, and funding is up to about $4.5 million.
  • The second project covers roughly 132 kilometres of Route 138 and service in Rivière-au-Tonnerre and Rivière-Saint-Jean. The new deadline is November 3, 2026, and funding is capped at just over $3 million.
  • Telus blamed weather-related safety delays at several tower sites. The CRTC said Telus had made "substantial progress" and that the delays were beyond its reasonable control.
Summary (AI)

The first project had already been pushed once, into summer 2026, so this is a second delay for that build. The second project’s funding cap reflects earlier scope and cost changes.

Both projects were selected by the CRTC years ago under the Broadband Fund, which backs cellphone and internet builds in places the market will not serve on its own. The extensions mainly affect people who live along these highway corridors and have been waiting on better coverage. Telus is also working on other Quebec connectivity projects, including a 125-kilometre underwater backup cable for the North Shore.
