While we continue to wait for its release, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 gets reviewed thoroughly by Smape, and based on the author’s personal encounter with the yet-to-be-released device, it’s pretty well built.

Comparing it to its closest rival, the HTC Touch Pro, the XPERIA X1 seems to have a slight edge with a larger screen and a 1500 mAh battery, but in the department where it matters most, the price, it is definitely a winner at 770 Euros as opposed to the 815 Euros of the Touch Pro (provided, of course, it stays that way until its officially released). Design and performance is pretty decent across the board. The keyboard, according to the author, could use some improvement as it lacked proper feel when using it. The large 3-inch screen is brilliant, though the non-standard 800x480 resolution could pose a problem visually for applications to launch correctly. If you want more details and pics, head on over to our source where they've got a ton of photos of the XPERIA X1 from every possible angle.

All in all, based on what we've read and seen, the XPERIA X1 has a lot of upside to it and seems worth waiting for just as long as it’s this year. I don’t think anyone can stomach to wait for a 2009 release as more cutting-edge mobile devices are sure to still arrive before the year ends.
