Apple’s iPhone Continues to Dominate U.S. Market
Key points
- In terms of operating system, Google's Android remained the leader, retaining 52% of the market, followed by Apple's iOS (39%), BlackBerry (5.2%), Microsoft's Windows Phone (3.0%) and Nokia's Symbian (0.5%).
- Samsung, which only saw a 0.7 percentage points increase from December, only released the highly-anticipated Galaxy S4 at the end of April this year.
- BlackBerry failed to barge into the top 5 as it only released the BlackBerry 10-running Z10 in the U.S. in March.
Apple is widening its lead over other rivals in the U.S. smartphone market. According to market research firm comScore, Apple boosted its market share to 39% as of March, compared to just 21.7% for second-placer Korea-based Samsung. Taiwan-based HTC (9%) kept the third spot but Google’s Motorola (8.5%) and Korean device-maker LG (6.8%) are closely catching up.
The iPhone 5 is definitely helping keep Apple ahead, as are older models of the company’s flagship product, while Samsung is still managing to push forward.
