The Roku Streaming Stick is a cinch to plug into any spacious enough HDMI port now that it doesn't require an MHL-compatible TV. From now on a "Roku Ready" HDTV just means having a TV with an ordinary HDMI port thanks to this more compatible version of the device. It's not quite as affordable as the Chromecast, but it has more of the apps that people want right now, including Amazon Instant Video. That's significant because Amazon often has cheaper HD movie rentals than other services. It's an app you won't find on either Chromecast or Apple TV.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the Roku Streaming Stick. I had really hoped that more services would be made available for the Chromecast, but progress on that end has been moving at a snail’s pace. You can simply do so much more with the Roku offering, and you’re only investing $15 more for a far more capable device. I’m sure you can sacrifice three drinks from Starbucks to pay the difference, right?

But if you have an Apple TV and you just want some additional programming choices, or if you want to experiment in puckland but you don’t want to spend the $100 to buy in at the top tier, the Streaming Stick makes a great entry-level choice.

The Roku Streaming Stick gets nearly everything right. The hardware is compact and portable, tons of apps are available, and the combination of the remote and the onscreen interface still makes for the best experience in the living room. For most buyers, it's well worth the $15 premium over the Chromecast, unless you're heavily invested in the Android media ecosystem.
Read full reviewI have long been frustrated by the piss-poor, molasses-slow Samsung Smart TV interface my telly has strapped me with. Roku makes it look like amateur hour, for not a lot of cash. This stick is a great buy; the only real downside is that it's going to make doing anything other than watching TV an insanely difficult task.
