4K HDR can look great, but picture quality across a number of apps is mixed, so while this is an affordable 4K streamer, it comes with some caveats.

A user-friendly and affordable media-streaming device that brings HD and 4K HDR10 content to any TV with an HDMI port, Roku Premiere is a recommendable device. With more than 4,000 apps it's unlikely you won't find support for your favourite streaming platforms, and Roku Search makes it easy to navigate across services and ensure you get the best value. The infra-red remote control must be in line of sight, but pair Premiere with the free mobile app or step up to Roku Streaming Stick+ with enhanced Bluetooth remote for seamless operation.

Of course, none of these limitations is specific to the Roku Premiere – you’ll find streaming 4K content is similarly limited across all streaming devices, irrespective of the manufacturer. The more significant shortcomings with the Roku Premiere relate to its design and the core user experience. Although it’s far from unsatisfactory in these respects, its pricier stablemate, the Streaming Stick Plus clearly has the better design along with a superior remote and Wi-Fi performance, making it well worth the extra £10 spend.

The Roku Premiere is a great streaming device for those that don't care about voice control or fancy features, and want to spend less than $30. While we missed some of the features available in the Roku Ultra or our favorite Apple TV 4K, not everyone needs anything that high tech in order to stream high-quality video. However, if you do want voice control and don't have any allegiance to Roku, then it's worth considering the Amazon Fire TV 4K, or upgrading to the Roku Premiere +.

The Premiere is a fantastic value. It works well, streams 4K reliably, and it's easy to use. Roku is delivering a lot for a small price.

Produces 4K HDR images at a price most people can afford

Dolby Vision disappointment aside, the Roku Premiere looks like an impressive (and, impressively cheap) piece of kit. 4K HDR streaming for $40 opens the door to discount cord-cutters in a way that hasn’t happened before.
