For the health and fitness-focussed out there, the Whoop Strap 3.0 will no doubt tick a lot of the boxes for what you’d want out a fitness tracker. The ability to track HRV in addition to superb sleep tracking mean that of the few things the strap actually does, it does so incredibly well. If you’re willing to invest your time and money into the Whoop ecosystem, there’s enough here that you’re sure to reap the benefits in no time, but a high asking price in the long run accompanied by a lack of guidance for people dipping their toes into fitness tracking prevent it from being widely recommended.

DC Rainmaker

Inaccurate optical heart rate sensor

from DC Rainmaker

Unfortunately, despite really liking the promise of the platform and the app itself, I just can’t justify spending $30/month anymore for a service that’s foundations are based on inaccurate data, has no knowledge of my training goals, and doesn’t provide me with guidance other than telling me to sleep 11 hours a night…every night.

Whoop still isn't quite perfect. You can do a whole lot more with Whoop Live than before, but the stats are still largely non-actionable data to novice exercisers, especially if they're not training for a specific goal. At times the strap and app disconnect, and there's a lag in the data available. The subscription model is more accessible than a $500 entry, but it's also much more of a commitment for people who aren't totally sold on the tracker.

The Whoop Strap 3.0 makes it clear how important sleep is to your recovery. It records a massive amount of data around your workout intensity and sleep, and makes you more accountable for your performance. With the reliability of that data tracking and some nice new software features, owners of the previous generation Whoop Strap may well be convinced to make that upgrade. If you're looking for a wrist-worn wearable to help take your training to the next level and you're willing to commit to that subscription, this is one for you.

The WHOOP Strap 3.0 is a competent wearable with an excellent app and charger. It’s easy to use and setup, is customisable and is great for wearing during contact sports such as jiu jitsu. On the other hand, the pricing model means it’s significantly more expensive than other comparable products given the features. The accuracy of the data also didn’t feel as robust as the Oura ring.
