What the Critics Are Saying...

At $799, the Sony Xperia 5 may be a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Xperia 1, but it’s still more than what you’d pay for the OnePlus 7 Pro, which offers a better software experience and possibly better cameras as well. Sony’s software has never been the best and the company isn’t known for rel...

There’s plenty to like about the Xperia 5, but there’s not quite enough to make it stand out against these other phones. With an (almost) identical feature list as its bigger brother, it’s certainly a smart move on Sony’s part to bring the price of its flagship down a peg or two. Sony’s software has never been the best and the company isn’t known for releasing timely updates, even for its flagship smartphones. And from playing with the cameras on the Xperia 5 for about 10 minutes, the image processing could be classified as mediocre, at best.

The size and the lovely colors are the main reasons to pay attention; but the camera needs to perform way better than other Sony phones recently to turn this interest into a compelling reason to buy. We’ll know more about the performance of the camera when we test the phone further, and hope that it surpasses our expectations, because the Xperia 5 definitely has potential.

Essentially a smaller and cheaper version of Xperia 1

from Tech Advisor

The Xperia 5 is good news for those who find the Xperia 1 too big and expensive. Really, this is the same phone but smaller and cheaper. It's a nice device with some decent specs and interesting features. However, unless you're a Sony fan there are quite possibly better phones available for less money still.

The Sony Xperia 5 is a smaller, more compact model of the Xperia 1 and it's lovely. The reduction in size makes for a more comfortable one-handed device, while many of the super flagship's features are retained. How the Xperia 5 will perform compared to the flagship Xperia 1 and its competitors remains to be seen for now, but we really like the Xperia 5. Sometimes good things come in smaller packages.

At first glance, the Xperia 5 is exactly what users sticking to the compact premium smartphone segment are looking for. It can do pretty much everything the Xperia 1 can with almost no compromises, except for the screen resolution. Still, depending on how you look at it, this could be an advantage and you don't really need all those pixels in such a small 6.1-inch diagonal - everything appears to be perfectly sharp.

A smaller, cheaper phone with a large, super-wide display

The Xperia 5 is more of the same, although this time around the screen is a smaller, a more manageable 6.1-inch model. Maintaining the same range of features that the Xperia 5's big brother had but at a cheaper price, this is arguably the more interesting phone.
