It's also extremely powerful and the new rear camera will please budding photographers who want to dig deep into the settings in search of the perfect shot. If you're a huge Sony fan and have very deep pockets then you really won't be disappointed with this device but that high price does give us a real dilemma.

With an RRP of £1,099, the Xperia 1 II is a true flagship phone pitched against the very best from Samsung, Apple, OnePlus, Huawei et al. Image quality compares without excelling and is impacted by the user ability rather than relying on automated modes. For us, when it comes to image making, the main reasons to choose the Xperia 1 II have to be around its niche handling. This is a photographer's phone, while video users are very well catered for, too.

The Sony Xperia 1 II excels at being a Sony: stylish, often with a surprisingly great camera, yet at the same time it never quite reaches out to be something better than a good camera in a sleek design. Sony seems to have abandoned all efforts to improve upon the stock Android experience, it doesn’t have any of the exciting new features in the Android world like fast refresh rates, fast charging, or long range zoom. US shoppers would also be disappointed to find support for 5G bands missing (the device will support Europe and Japan 5G bands). And it costs a whopping $1,200.

The Sony Xperia 1 II stands out from the crowd by offering a photo and video capture experience tailored towards enthusiasts and pros. If you fit this niche and prioritize pro camera features and image accuracy above all else, the Xperia 1 II is definitely worth shortlisting. However, a more typical user is likely to find a rival phone like the S20 Ultra or P40 Pro gives slightly more pleasing images, even if they're not quite as true to life.

I think this phone is best suited to tinkerers—folks that don't mind fiddling around with settings to get the display calibrated exactly right, messing the equalizer to tune the audio to their liking, or futzing with the camera controls to grab a better shot. If that's not you, look to phones like the Pixel 4 or iPhone 11, which have equally great cameras that don't require you to do as much work to get a stunning result.
