The Sony Ericsson W960 is a great looking smartphone with plenty of top-notch features to offer. However, the user interface and touch implementation make it difficult to get around, and frustrating to use. The Walkman music player and 8GB of internal storage are certainly tempting, but the dreadfully slow USB data transfers and lack of Genre support in the music player are hard to overlook. Also, while the camera application is zippy, the flash and other settings are extremely inconvenient to change, meaning it's only really good for point-and-shoot. Overall, I give the Sony Ericsson W960 a Not Recommended rating. There are plenty of other music-oriented smartphones with good cameras that don't give you a headache to use.

Summing it up, the Sony Ericsson W960 easily offers more than any other Sony Ericsson Walkman before. Positive changes compared to the W950 are noticeable both in system performance and in the hardware equipment. In terms of software, the handset is identical to the previous UIQ 3 mobiles and, when compared to Nokia S60 smartphones, loses only on VoIP capabilities, which are much more elaborate in the latest S60 mobiles.

The biggest controversy as we see it, when making the purchase decision for W960, lies in the use of a touchscreen interface for a regular smartphone. Our opinion is that a smartphone interface should be either optimized for finger touching or the screen should not be touch sensitive at all. Pulling the stylus out for anything except handwriting on the screen is not justifiable. So, just to put it shortly, the W960 would have been a great choice if it had some sort of a D-pad to allow easy single-handed navigation through the menu options without the need for stylus all the time.

However, we find the Sony Ericsson W960 a great choice for all you music fans that don't mind using both hands for operating their handset.

I got this as an upgrade of my W810i (which I'd also rate 5/5) and was very impressed. It's 3G for fast internet, and has in-built WLAN (Wi-Fi) so I can browse the net in my house for free over my broadband connection. It can even be used on my university's wireless network, and at various coffee shops etc around Sheffield with Wireless hotspots. This makes it very useful. It can read PDA files, either downloaded directly, or transferred by the (included) data cable. I have Sheffield's bus and tram maps and timetables of my most frequently used buses, so that if I'm in the pub and need to remember the time of my last bus, I needn't even use the internet! it also supports MS Office files (word, excel etc) - so useful! I have a diabetic friend who uses the in-built spreadsheet to keep note of his glucose levels on his W960! the camera is wonderful. At 3.2 megapixels, it's bigger and better than my primary digital camera, and because Sony have been making cameras for years, the lenses are all top-quality optics (Sony's economy of scale means they're so cheap). I am constantly disappointed by Nokia's camera/lens offerings (my girlfriend's Nokia 6300's 2 megapixel camera is an abomination, seemingly barely worthy of status as VGA) The Walkman media player is STUNNING! It's a massive leap on Walkman player in the W810, and the clunky player on the P990. You can browse with album art, have the player automatically sense the mood (happy/depressing) and tempo (fast/slow) of a song, so you can choose music to suit your mood - a very cute little effect. There's no shake control as the W910, but who want your walkman to skip when you drive over a bump? You can also browse it using the touch screen, either with the included stylus, or your finger (much like the adverts for the, iphone you will see on TV). Well, I've alluded to it now, so I may as well be explicit about it - this ... Less

Upgraded to this phone from a K750i. It seems to have EVERYTHING, touch screen, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, handwriting recognition etc. It's very thin but quite wide and tall, although you need the size to make full use of the screen. Few bad points I've noted on first few days of ownership are: 1. no joystick for navigation, can be a bit annoying if writing a text and have to edit bits using the stylus or a big cumbersome finger. 2. poor battery. My battery is down to 15% after just 2days usage, although I put this down to me playing with all the features and having the Wi-Fi enabled all the time. Possibly see it lasting longer during normal use. 3. Slow to respond, as its a smartphone its alot more like a computer, you run programs to do things. If a 'program' (eg. Messaging) is not already running in the background it takes a few seconds to load then open up. Programs tend to stay running in the background when u close them so can build up a bit and slow the phone down. Programs CAN be closed using the task manager however. Once already my phone has restarted with the message "Phone has restarted to increase performance". Similar to a computer crashing if it overloads I guess. Very decent phone though, haven't tested out the camera fully yet, I was impressed with my K750i's 2mp camera so I can imagine the W960i's 3.2mp camera will be more of the same, maybe a tad better. All this phone really needs is GPS for googlemaps-navigation and a faster interface and it would be complete. Less
