It is not going to be the perfect device for people interested in heavy text messaging or web browsing. The ergonomics of the design just don't allow for that.

Given a better keypad and d-pad controller, the W880 would have earned a better rating. As-is, I can only give it a solid "Recommended" rating instead.

Wired

Works perfectly as a phone

from Wired

This phone is so sweet; you might be tempted to scarf it down. Don't! The W880i is capable of so much more than just giving you nasty gastrointestinal pain. Besides being dead sexy with its striking metallic and rubberized case, and nearly as thin (9.5 mm!) as a Nano, the W880i is also a damn good music player. The integrated Walkman Player 2.0 may lack the slickness of an iPod's UI, but it still streamlines the process of transferring songs from a Mac or PC. The 1.8-inch screen is a tad small, but also bright, colorful and offers nearly a 180-degree viewing angle. A 2.0-megapixel cam takes decent yet noisy pics, but that's no biggie. You're probably not purchasing this phone for its image-capturing prowess...

WIRED Clear, precise sound from music player. Works perfectly as a phone. Buttons are spaced evenly apart and provide good force feedback. Nearly inexhaustible battery. 3G Web browser is quick and easy to access. Includes 1GB Memory Stick Micro. Transferring music is simple process of click and drag.

TIRED Included earbuds are so bad, they must be a practical joke from Sony. AC adapter and headset plug into the same port-so in order to charge the phone and listen to music simultaneously, you need to awkwardly piggyback the two. (Unless you're synched up to a set of dorky Bluetooth headphones.)

The Sony Ericsson W880 is a great addition to the Sony Ericsson lineup. Furthermore it is a really intriguing addition to the group of the slimmest champion mobile phones in the market. Since most of those doesn't feature 3G support, the W880 will most surely find its market niche and would gain strong popularity.

We are impressed with the usability of the device, the nice technical specifications, the great music player and the decent battery life. All in all, a great move from Sony Ericsson that would win them a lot of fans. Well, as it seems, the Sony Ericsson W880 was surely worth the commotion and all that months of waiting.

Easy to unlock while in pocket or purse The only bad thing about the Sony-Ericsson Walkman is that the internet button is on the front of the phone. Even if the phone is in my pocket locked it is so easy to unlock my phone spends a lot of time on the internet despite the fact that I have never used it for that purpose. The last time I checked I had over 7 hours of internet usage in less than 3 weeks. Its crazy. Other than that I love this phone. Its functional and stylish. Its easy to use and operate. I went from a Samsung BlackJack to this phone and it was a great choice. Less

Pro: Very well made. Does a LOT of 'things'. Nice MP3 player. Con: Stupid adaptor for charging and audio connection. So-so phone. Why is it that cell phone makers have forgotten the PRIME need of a cell phone - THE PHONE? This is a great phone to look at. And a wonderful Walkman. But the phone portion is lacking. It is an OK phone. The sound is OK, and the reception is OK. If you want a GREAT phone, look at a Samsung. My biggest compaint, and not just with Sony, is the proprietary connectors. In order to connect external ear phones, you have to have this goiter of a thing on the side of the phone. Instead of having a STANDARD 2.5mm jack, you have to have an adaptor to then place your 2.5mm plug in to it. Clunky. The Bluetooth works well. My earpiece connects with no problems. The camera is OK. But I am not buying a PHONE for its camera. The phone works well when you are in towns that have strong cell signals. Where I live, on the fringe of major cities, the reception is only fair. As I pointed out earlier, Samsung is THE phone to have in fringe areas. Where my Samsung will always get 2 to 3 bars in my fringe area, the Sony gets maybe 1 or 2 - if I am lucky, and a lot of the time no bars. Bottom line, if you want a great MP3 player, this is it. (Except for the goiter adapter you have to use.) If you live in an area with great cell coverage, this phone will work for you. If you live in a marginal cell coverage area, well, this is a 50/50 phone. The Walkman side of it will be great, but the phone side...well it depends on which way you might point the phone. Good luck. (Oh, and sorry about the formatting of this review. I tried to put in paragraph breaks and such, but I guess that isn't allowed here.) Less
