Samsung Montage review

RATING

6/10
Informr score
The Samsung Montage currently has an Informr score of 6 out of 10. This score is based on our evaluation of 2 sources including reviews from users and the web's most trusted critics.

Some phones are good for music playback while others are good for taking pictures. The Samsung Montage is an example of a phone that’s good for messaging on the go.

Its main features include a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth wireless, USB connectivity, and support for microSD cards. It’s actually a fairly basic handset that lacks many of today’s latest phone features; it doesn’t have Wi-Fi or 4G LTE. But what it does have is a hardware QWERTY keyboard that slides out from behind the screen and turns it into a landscape messaging device.

As you can imagine, the Montage is great for long bouts of text messaging or emails. As most reviews note, it’s a very useful messaging phone, for sure. However, its other attributes are quite disappointing overall.

If you've got a bit of room in your budget and aren't 100% set on a physical keyboard, you might be better served by competitive devices.

Need to Know: Samsung Montage

1. Hardware QWERTY keyboard for typing out long messages easily. (The Good)

2. Affordable price point. (The Good)

3. Lacks Wi-Fi connectivity. (The Bad)

4. Small, low-resolution screen. (The Bad)

Yet, it does excel at exactly what a phone should do while adding a few extras here and there. The phone book stores multiple fields for each contact, plus a photo and a dedicated ringtone. You also can organize contacts into groups. Other organizer features include a calendar, a calculator, a notepad, a world clock, and a voice recorder.

A functional messaging phone without a contract, though its poor battery life and entry-level features hardly stand out in the crowd

Taken in the context of Virgin Mobile's feature phone options, the Samsung Montage is an acceptable choice. Based on looks alone, I prefer its build to the Samsung M575's (which is why it also gets higher marks in that category), though the latter has a slightly larger battery for longer talk time, and the camera may be slightly better on the M575. However, I also personally prefer the Montage's keyboard, which makes the comparison a toss-up. I strongly recommend that Virgin customers looking at these two phones test them out in-store before buying.
