Problems with data/ speakerphone
I never had a data plan but this phone would send data at ridiculous hours in the morning (4am, 5am) when I was fast asleep. I don't know what kind of automatic updates it has. I checked all the settings and then had to call my service provider to disable ANY kind of data exchange. Of course, this means that I can't send/receive any picture messages, which is pretty annoying but now I'm stuck with this phone. The software is not great either. It works fine as a basic phone. If you're looking for a loud speaker-phone, this might not be the right choice. Texting features are not great. It takes OK pictures.Less
Good phone sans bells, whistles.
I have had this phone for 2 years now. I bought it b/c it was small (I carry my phones in my pockets), it had bluetooth, has a good battery life and reviews said the call quality was good. All of those things have been as advertised and I have had no issues. I have even gotten into using it as an MP3 player, and while it's not fancy it is passable. The camera is below average and doesn't always work. I would recommend this phone for anyone who uses their phone as a "phone" and doesn't care about the extras.Less
On my second defective SLM
I want to love this phone. It's sleek and user-friendly. The buttons feel nice, it has a very strong vibrate setting, and the camera is very good quality for a flip phone. The battery life is extremely long and it recharges quickly. I've had a few quibbles about it. The external screen, for example, doesn't show the time without holding the side button for three seconds. (I'd prefer to hit it once to see the time.) The speaker is also a little quiet. With the volume on max I can have conversations in my apartment with no problem, but talking outside or in public can be impossible unless the other person is shouting. Annoying, but not a big deal. My main issue is their short life span. After owning the phone for about 6 months, I had an issue with being heard. With calls received or made, I could hear the other party, but they couldn't hear me for anywhere from 20 seconds to several minutes after I picked up; then it would switch on. It was under warranty, so I exchanged it for a replacement. Now it's been another 6 months, and the camera is no longer functional. I get a "camera failed" message. I've reset settings, powered off and on, but it doesn't fix the problem. If my first SLM were still working, it'd easily be a 4-star phone. Having 2 defective SLMs in a one year period however is just unacceptable.Less
IT's a good starter phone
This one is a good starter phone for anyone. I have had it for two years and am getting a new phone tomorrow. It is ery easy to text on and the buttons are easy to use. If you drop things a lot do not get it becuase the phone will brake eventually. It's camera is not that strong though and it goes into emergency calls only mode a lot when you do not have service for a while but it will go back to normal if you turn your phone off then back on. There is also a block list option and sometimes you might block someone by accident which makes them not able to text or call you so you have to check to make sure you did not. It is very slim and you will not break it if you keep it in your back pocket.... trust me! Overall the phone is good for people who want an easy to use phone for their first time! But like wth other phones there are a few cons but still a couple of pros.Less
I like this phone. I'm not a texter so don't use this review for anything to do w/ texting. I like all the features of the phone though. The battery lasts about a week between charges. Had for about a month or so. The only down side is I wish the backlite timer would stay on for more than 10 secs.Less
Not worth the money
I have owned this type of phone for over a year now and it really has just been a hassle the entire time. THREE times, I have had to send this phone back and have a replacement one sent back to me. For some unknown reason, this phone will just loose service one day and never get it back. The guys at ATT never can explain it, but it always results in me having a buy a temporary phone while I am waiting on a new one to arrive. My roommates also have ATT and NEVER lose service in our home; with this phone, however, I constantly am missing calls because it has lost service. Not to mention I repeatedly have dropped calls. Ultimately, I ended up buying another phone from the Internet because this phone is simply too unreliable. I originally purchased this phone because of slim design and the appealing features, but at the end of the day, I really just want a phone that works.Less
Not a good phone.
Pro: Its pretty, sleek, and the rolling camera is good only when you are bored you can roll it. Con: I have many cons. the phone chips off paint and scratches easily. the camera is so confusing when you are trying to take a picture and it. takes about 15 seconds to actually take a picture and by then, why bother taking it? the picture is upside down when you take it. when you want to see the time without opening your phone, you have to hold the button down for 3 seconds and then it lights up for the same amount of time. the battery is not good at all. Using experience: 5 months The phone is not good at all. I am SO displeased with it and I regret getting it. It works only if you want to make phone calls, other than that, it is complicated and not worth time. If you are thinking about getting this phone, don't. I am 18 and very good with technology and this phone doesn't cut it. It is bad.Less
Terrible reception, poor call quality
Business users, take note: This phone is a portable dead zone. Do not purchase this phone if reception in your primary area of use is anything less than blow-your-doors-off, full bars at all times. The SLM's antenna is exceptionally weak, and the operation system has enormous difficulty logging onto and holding varying signals. As a result, calls are dropped or fail to dial through at all, and text messages sit undelivered in the outbox or remain unreceived well past the time when they were sent. Also, when calls do connect, the speaker and microphone provide muddy, strangely clipped sound fidelity. The SLM gets points for its slim, lightweight form factor and easy-to-use navigation, but the frustrations and embarrassments of a phone that cannot provide basic telecommunications far outweigh any other purchasing concern.Less
Forewarned is FOREARMED!
Samsung phone is OK. AT&T is OK - unless you expect them to honor the one year warranty. They won't. They just glibly state that the phone has water damage and the customer has no recourse whatsoever. For starters, the warranty SAYS NOTHING ABOUT WATER DAMAGE. Under the cover next to the battery is a white square. If that square ever turns red, it proves to them [but certainly not the world] that the phone has water damage. My phone was never dropped in water, never rained on, never steamed, never sprayed and never spat upon. It quit working properly after 8 months. When asked, at the AT&T store, to honor the one year warranty they held their pompous noses high and refused any negotiations whatsoever. I believe they have a cozy way of skirting the warranty. The white square is designed to slowly change to red by virtue of the moisture in one's breath while talking on the phone and/or the high humidity conditions generated in one's pocket from his body warmth and mild perspiration. They blatantly blame the customer instead of admitting this cozy little subterfuge then refuse to honor the warranty. They should be arrested and incarcerated. Spend the extra $5 per month to get the insurance and maybe you will get a fair deal when your phone stops working properly and the ALMIGHTY white square under the cover has turned to scarlet [in their eyes, proving the hapless customer damned and sinful].Less
great phone, easy to use
I wish I had selected this one for myself. The A747 has a bigger screen than the A737 (comparing both phones my kids have), and has clear menus. The central control area lets your finger just slide easily around to all the compass points to hit your shortcuts. Good sound & picture quality, uses a standard mini SD card you can get cheaply nearly anywhere. Holds lots of mp3s. Keypad is excellent size for large fingers (and moms with blurry eyesight) just the right size for typing, and this model feels right in your hand. This flip phone is easy to open and feels solidly made. My teenager has it, but I'd like to swap. Too bad he won't appreciate my phone; it's pink!Less
