amsung's Galaxy A7 is to be a mainstream smartphone, but it is also to satisfy even somewhat higher demands at the same time. Samsung masters this balancing act quite well: The high-quality casing is pleasant to hold, and its plain, classy looks let us forget the Korean manufacturer's design gaffes of the past.

Although the Galaxy A7 barely stands out exceptionally in any category, it is actually always good - and that is exactly what many people want from a smartphone: That it remains unobtrusive and functions. Samsung could still improve the voice quality: static noise in the microphone and the unclear rendering of sibilants are annoying. It is also too bad that Wi-Fi reception makes a mediocre impression, and that the GPS module does not seem very trustworthy, particularly since the speaker does a good job, the smartphone has enough power, and the camera is well equipped for everyday use.

The Galaxy A7 is something fresh from Samsung. Focus has been given to improve it’s design and build, two areas where they have been criticized for in the past. Overall the handset is something you would expect from a Note 4 Neo version if there was one. Sure it doesn’t have a stylus but it does have a beautiful large screen, good battery life and unlike the Neo’s in the past, there is no compromise on the design. There are a few drawbacks such as the lack of notification light, the lack of OIS and video recording options. It’s a midrange device in a premium body but it is a good performer for the price you pay and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a phablet but doesn’t want all the features as a Note 4 and doesn’t want to spend as much. You still get a premium handset for a much cheaper price and will definitely get a few people to notice you.

Good performance, excellent design

The phablet will turn plenty heads with its slender, light but rigid metal frame and beautiful 5.5" Super AMOLED screen. The phablet will turn plenty heads with its slender, light but rigid metal frame and beautiful 5.5" Super AMOLED screen. Then some of those heads will sag a little when they see it's the familiar Galaxy picture drawn with more expensive paints. They will hang lower still when they find out that the internal hardware is closer to a midrange device rather than the high-muscle silicon inside the excellent Galaxy Note 4.

The Galaxy A7 represents more a philosophical break from Galaxy tradition than a visual one. No longer a manic chase after the latest specs (which will be old news in 6 months), the phablet wants to win over its buyers in person rather than through number-touting ads.

The Samsung Galaxy A7 redraws the overdone Galaxy blueprint with new materials and slimmed down body. Even if we put aside the nagging feeling that looks have barely progressed since 2012's Galaxy S III, it's hard not to think this is a midrange phablet in expensive clothes.
