Samsung SPH-A640 Camera Phone

from bonafidereviews.com
Today in the BFR labs we have the Samsung SPH-A640 cell phone. The A640 is one of Samsung's newest phones on the market and belongs to service provider Sprint. The A640's form is a flip-phone where the front cover flips upwards to expose the keypad. It features Sprint's ReadyLink walkie-talkie technology, web browsing capability, SMS messaging, text messaging, Bluetooth connectivity, and a built-in camera... Full review

Purchased this phone in early 2006 and I still love it. It is a great basic phone. All I need a phone for is talking and texting and it does the job well. Most glitches are related to service provider as I live in a rural area with rolling hills so it would be the same result with any phone one might use. Am looking for a new phone now as I would like to switch cell service providers. I am hoping the replacement model is as good. Would still use this one if I could. Less

Pile of junk. When I flip it open, some other screen can come up randomly as if I've given some command to it to do so. I can't dial out until I close the phone for a minute or so until this dumb screen clears itself. No amount of pressing "end" will clear this light-blue screen. That same screen will appear as I'm searching through my contacts. And, like other posters, mine will turn itself off now and then without warning. And finally, ever now and then my SPH-A640 will "freeze up" and nothing works at all. The only way that I can fix that problem is to actually pull the battery and put it back in, and turn it on again. This phone is a garbage. Less

For those who say that this phone makes the words " Come Out Like This" , i found a solution that i use. When i use T9, i use # (for space) then 0, after each word. Then the next word you write is lower cased.

Good overall phone one big flaw.

I've had my phone for a few years. It stands up well to abuse. Has many good features. Large fonts, many ringers, good color, I've had no trouble with the camera.. My biggest complaint is, once you've saved pictures to phone and deleted pics in camera, you can not send them or do anything with them. Unfortunately I found this out because I'm getting a new phone and wanted to save them to a photo album or to my email. They are in my phone forever. You can only work with them while in "in camera" not "saved to phone". If i had known this in advance I would have no real complaints. Less

This was my very first cellphone; my mother and I both got them in the spicy red model almost 3 years ago and these phones have never failed us. Well, actually, my first one wouldn't even activate, but that was before I even got the darn thing and I have had a functional one in my own hands from day 1 ;) I even switched back to it after a nightmare 2 week experience with a Kyocera S4000 Mako. Both phones are very durable and have been dropped, kicked, sat on, rolled on, & thrown across the room without damage. The outside screens are tough and very scratch resistant- I have maybe 6 minor marks from all the abuse I have put this phone through. If you want a phone that is going to last this is the one. I think the phone is pretty stylish. It is a bit chunky, but that's what makes it durable. The LCD is nice and bright as well. I wish it had come with a USB cable or a memory slot so I can add wallpapers ect. but I just bought a 3rd party product for that purpose. This phone doesn't have many bells and whistles. The camera is eh, and I have never used the internet on it since my plan does not cover that feature. The alarm clock is great, it has only failed me once when I forgot my phone was on silent. The calendar is handy but I usually get missed alarm notices from it. I have used the voice activated dialing in my car via bluetooth and it is pretty accurate with what you want it to do. I've gotten great reception almost everywhere with this phone. Usually I'm the only one who even has a signal when my friends and I are out in the country or at camp. The battery is decent, I can usually go about 2 days of normal usage before it needs a charge. My phone is quick to send and receive texts but, I will sometimes get duplicates or triples of texts from people. Also, if my boyfriend sends me long text messages or multiple texts in a row, the phone will not get them in order and I have to play cut and paste with the messages. T9 isn't the greatest, and the phone will capitalize every letter So You Type Like This even if you shift down. It is annoying, but you get used to it eventually. Overall this is a great phone. Durable, functional, great reception and a decent battery life. Text could be improved with a better T9 and fixing the capitalizing problem. I would defiantly suggest this for anyone who wants a cellphone, not a media or smart phone. Less

Terrible

I was nice for the first year and a half now it sucks. This may be Bell's fault but: -it delays -it doesn't always send your messages -have terrible reception in most places -dies fast -terrible T-9. I have read a lot of people have issues with the phone turning off. This only happened to me when I installed msn messenger. When I stopped using this application on my phone, it stopped rebooting. Reception: Okay Texting: Great, but I wish it had a more advanced dictionary, so I can add words. Those people complaining about the capitalization of the beginning of words apparently do not realize there is a shift function to change it. Camera: Not the greatest, but it's a phone camera, what do you expect? Battery: I have never had to change the battery. I get a good charge. Less

Not a bad phone..

I've had this phone for 2.5 years, and honestly, I haven't had too many problems with it. I text frequently, and the thing that bothers me the most is how in each text you send, it capitalizes each new word...So Each Text You Send Looks Like This. It gets annoying, but it's livable. So far I have never had it randomly shut off on me. I mean, other than when the battery dies haha. Hopefully it will stay this way until my 3 year contract is over in December! The problem I have been having recently is when receiving text messages. I have it set to vibrate whenever I get a text or a call. The past few months I've noticed that it won't always vibrate when I get a text. I find myself having to check my phone every so often to see if I have a text because I can't rely on it vibrating. It still vibrates everytime I get a call, or when my alarm goes off though. Also, the past few weeks, it has been vibrating when nothing happens...I did not receive a call, or a text, and no alarm/schedule...so it was vibrating for no reason at all!! Other than that, I've been fortunate and have had no problems with this phone! I don't recommend this phone for internet usage...that feature didn't work well on this phone. Also, if you text a lot like I do, then get a phone with a keyboard. It gets annoying texting with the number pad after a while... Less
